Daniel Grimes Medlin, Jr of Benson, NC passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday March 22 after a brief illness. Born in Benson, on May 19, 1958, he was the son of the late Maxine Koch Medlin and Daniel Grimes Medlin. Danny graduated from South Johnston High School in 1976 and from Appalachian State University in 1980. He played football for all four years as an offensive tackle and was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Many of his fraternity brothers were still his closest friends.
Following graduation, Danny came to work for the family business Medlin and Dorman. His grandfather opened Medlin and Dorman in downtown Benson in 1929. Danny was president and co-owner with his brother for over 42 years. He loved working with his father and brother and was proud that the tradition continued with his son. Danny was involved with Ducks Unlimited, the Lions Club, Wounded Warriors, Project Healing Waters, the Benson Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh.
Although Danny was born in Benson, he grew up and learned to walk and fish at Atlantic Beach. He was an avid fly fisherman and fly tyer and was fortunate to catch and release many fish in so many beautiful places. Danny was happiest spending time at the beach with his family, friends, or a fly rod in his hand, always looking for his next big catch.
Without a doubt, his greatest catch was Katie. They were married for 40 joy filled years. Danny was devoted to his family and grateful that he was able to see both of his children walk down the aisle. His dances with them at their weddings were the best dances of his life.
Danny was preceded in death by his sister, Kathy Medlin Barbour and his brother-in-law Aat David Zevenhuizen. He is survived by his devoted wife Cathryn Zevenhuizen Medlin, son Daniel Grimes Medlin III and wife Paige, daughter Cathryn Medlin Paradise and husband Andrew. He is also survived by his brother William Ralph Medlin and wife Bonnie, brother-in-law Charles Albert Zevenhuizen and wife Robin, sister-in-law Eva Zevenhuizen Stancil and husband Danny and brother-in-law, DeVan Barbour and wife P.J. as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is thankful for the care of Dr. Kirk Faust, Dr. Jeremiah Boles, Dr. David White, care managers Holly Ashachek and Jan Powell and the incredible nurses on 4 West at Rex Hospital. They will be forever grateful to close friends who were constant with their calls, notes, prayers, and devoted with their love.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 4:00PM-6:00PM at Benson Global Methodist Church in the Fellowship Hall. A service to celebrate Danny’s life will be held at 2:00PM on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh. A reception will be held at the church following the service.
