Darlene MacRunnels Obituary

Darlene Joyce MacRunnels January 14, 1925 – June 1, 2025 Age: 100 years fabulous
Darlene Joyce MacRunnels of Virginia Beach, VA, born January 14, 1925, to Hobart and Ella Lemon in Chandler, MN, officially clocked out at 100 years young on June 1, 2025. And what a century it was.
Darlene lived life in bold strokes-with a twinkle in her eye and a wardrobe heavy on her favorite color: blue (the brighter, the better). A proud employee of Montgomery Ward back in the day, she could out-organize anyone in a 10-mile radius and always knew where to find the best deals.
She was a woman of action and heart. As a devoted Pink Lady volunteer at the local hospital, she brought cheer and candy (mostly candy). She delivered Meals on Wheels like a boss, knew every corner of the local library as a longtime volunteer, and still managed to show up in full regalia for her meetings with the Rebekahs of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows-an organization whose values she lived every day: friendship, love, and truth. She was also a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
Darlene's laugh was contagious, her opinions were strong (especially about board games-Scrabble in particular), and her generosity was endless. She didn't just live 100 years-she used every one of them.
She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, a Rolodex of friends, and probably a few library books still checked out in her name.
Heaven just got a little sassier.
Arrangements are being handled by Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, VA. A graveside service will be held in Spirit Lake, Iowa at a later date. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Darlene, please visit our floral store.
