David Johnson Obituary

David Edward Johnson died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021, at his home in Manchester, N.H., succumbing to multiple myeloma after a valiant eight-year fight. He was 72. He will be remembered for his devotion to family, his long career as a journalist, his love of sports and travel, his generous and kind nature, and his proud status as a veteran of the US Air Force. He is survived by his beloved wife, Leslie Johnson, his daughter, Dr. Samantha K. Spears and her husband, Brian, stepson Scott O'Hagan and his wife Michelle, stepdaughter Shannon Murray, his grandchildren Noah and Aubrey Spears, Nina Murray, Leslie O'Hagan, and Taylor Sullivan, his sisters Carolyn Johnson and Lorrie Johnson and her husband Art Dalglish, niece Sarah Dalglish, and nephew Evan Dalglish. David was born Aug. 17, 1948, in New Haven, Conn., to Walter L. Johnson and Margaret (Neal) Johnson, the oldest of three children. He was raised in Massapequa, N.Y., graduating from A.G. Berner High School in 1966. He attended Hofstra University for a year, then enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, and was stationed for a year in Da Nang. After his discharge, he finished his education at San Jose State University, where he majored in journalism and was the editor of the campus newspaper. He was hired as a journalist with the Manchester Union leader and retired as the Sunday sports editor after more than 30 years of employment with the newspaper. He was a proud friend of Bill W. for 33 years and he found a purpose in helping others on the path towards sobriety. He loved bicycling and hiking in nature, and late in life enjoyed kayaking in New Hampshire's beautiful waterways. His family and friends will miss his intellect and extraordinary ability to recall events. He was the keeper of family memories, including the exact year of their occurrence, and if one needed to know the name and years of service for any U.S. vice president, you could simply pick up the phone and ask Dave. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a private family service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 28. For all friends and family who wish to attend virtually, the service may be viewed at 4:30 p.m. at the following link: https://phaneuf.net/streaming PASSWORD: streaming In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the International Myeloma Foundation. A burial at the NH State Veterans' Cemetery will be scheduled for this spring.

My sincere condolences to Leslie and the rest of Dave's family. Dave and I were in the same crowd and as a latecomer to it, he welcomed me as if we had always known each other. Dave and Leslie and Marie and I hit it off after our 2008 class reunion and spoke about meeting afterwards... we never got to it... too bad. I apologize for not responding sooner but I didn't know until I saw Dave's name on our Deceased Classmates list on Facebook yesterday. I was truly shocked. Again, my deep condolences. -Jim Williams

Dear Leslie and Samantha,
I was so sorry to hear about David's death. I didn't know about it until Sunday, and that was after you held the memorial. I regret not attending.
I like that you and David lived in Manchester, because on occasion we'd run into each other. Whenever I ran into David, it was like finding a $20 bill. I'd be out and about in Manchester, and there he would be with Leslie, and -- many years ago -- with Samantha. (He was so proud of you, Samantha.)
We never talked for hours, but I'd always leave a conversation with David feeling better than when I started. That was because of his easy going nature, his intelligence, and his conversational abilities.
He did share his challenges with cancer, but the last time I saw him he appeared to be getting the better of it. But he suffered from a deadly strain. Damn cancer. He died too young for such a good man.
He, and you two, will be in my prayers.

I worked with Dave at the New Hampshire Union Leader for about 30 years, many of them as his assistant editor for the Sunday sports section. He was the consummate professional and put out the finest Sunday Sports section in the state for many years. It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with him. Truly a gentleman, Dave was kind, generous and compassionate. He was a genuinely wise person and very well respected by all who knew him, especially those who worked with him. I have many, many fond memories of Dave. He was a wonderful person and made the world a better place every day he graced the earth. I will miss him dearly. May God Rest his soul. His friend and co-worker, John Tucker.

Leslie and Family

While we did not know David well our Monday Yoga Class meetings with were always something we looked forward to because of his ready smile, his many interests and willingness to share his knowledge and experiences. We also shared a love of classical music and enjoyed seeing him and you at various concerts.
His presence and personality will be missed.

Dear Leslie and Dave's family, Dave was such a gentile, decent and humble man who will live on for all of us who were blessed to be in his presence. He added so much grace and joy to our fellowship that I will always remember all he had to offer us in his sharing. A very special man and a power of example to me.

Leslie, my deepest condolences for your loss, as well as everyone else's loss. I spoke often with Dave about his affliction as I was going through similar circumstances. He always exuded a calmness and spirit, and listened well, and was more concerned about any troubles I may be having than his own. What better can we do in life than to leave that love and goodness toward others behind? He was a good good man, and he will be missed, but he will also be here in us, for a long time to come.

Dave and I were close friends for 57 years. Our lives travelled different paths, but always touched with regularity. We met in high school, shared the same friends, and both moved to California after our military service days. We talked about everything, and visited as often as two people living three thousand miles apart could manage. We still talked on the phone every week or two. Of all the people I have known, Dave was reliably the nicest. He will be greatly missed by everyone.

David was one of the kindest people I have ever met. I always enjoyed chats with him about family and football. He was very special in that he always took time to listen and share his insights, which always stemmed from kindness. While I am sad to hear that he is gone, I am happy to have called him my friend.

A professional with a capital "P", and a gentleman with a capital "G" - THAT was the Dave Johnson I knew. During my years of involvement with youth baseball (Youngsville in the 1980's, Pony, Jutras Post, and West High in the 1990's), I had the absolute privilege of interacting with Dave on many Saturday nights when he was the New Hampshire Sunday News sports editor. He was a towering presence (6' 4") in the newsroom, yet projected an aura of quiet, calm professionalism in an otherwise high-pressure, deadline-based business. Even though I was just an outside contributor and not anything close to a real UL/SN employee, he always treated me with the utmost courtesy, even as I bombarded his writers with reams of box score "green sheets" and tons of hand-written game verbiage. Now, I do understand the order of things involving life and death, but it still stinks that so many UL/SN writers that I used to enjoy dealing with over the years have passed on - Jim Heath, John Hussey, Bobby Donahue, Joe Sullivan, Gary Galanis, and now Dave. I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

My first, and lifelong friend since 4th grade, growing up in Massapequa Park. He had a big heart that embraced so many, and was the social glue that brought together and kept so many in touch. I'm so glad he finally met and wed Leslie, the love of his life. Forever in mymemory and heart.

David was a good man, with a thoughtful, reasoned, welcoming and friendly personality. We hadn't seen each other in several years, but reconnected last fall and were trying to get together in person, which unfortunately didn't happen due to his recent medical condition and the scourge of covid. David, thanks for your friendship and I know you will rest in peace and contentment. My thoughts are with Sam and Leslie and the rest of the family.
