David Jacob Schiro, age 34, passed away unexpectedly on December 24th, 2023. Born in Metaire, La. on December 15, 1989, he was the son of Joseph "Rocky" Gettys & Chandra K Gettys. David is survived by his parents and brother, Andrew C. Schiro. He is also survived by his grandparents, Frank Joseph Schiro, Michael D. & Cathy Morel Navo. David will be missed dearly by all of his aunts, uncles and cousins in the Schiro, Navo & Gettys families, and his beloved dog, "Hime." Preceding him in death is his father, Anthony P. Schiro, grandmother Linda Haralson Schiro, and grandmother Dottie Trosclair Gettys.
David graduated from Mandeville High School and attended Delgado Community College. He spent years working as an automotive technician. Although he took pleasure in repairing cars and other broken equipment, his true passion was assisting others in recovery from addiction and mental health. David became a certified Peer Support Specialist and also worked at recovery facilities, Volunteers of America and the National Association for Mental Illness (NAMI). He was planning to build his career in this field and become a counselor.
David spent much of his time away from work caring for his reptilian pets and fish. He truly loved all animals, sea life and fishing. He also enjoyed throwing darts, playing his guitar and reading. His passion that lead him to work in mental health and addiction recovery also kept him busy in his community, helping others who struggle with the difficulties of addiction. David will always remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
A short and intimate funeral ceremony will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 2:00 pm at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington, LA 70433. Guests may begin to arrive at 1:45 PM for the service. In lieu of traditional services consisting of a wake/visitation at the funeral home, the family will have a Celebration Ceremony for all friends and family to join together to remember, share and learn the journey of David's life. Most importantly, whether it was short or long, we will reminisce about the time we spent with him and the impact he had on our lives. Once those arrangements are complete, we will have an update with those details. If anyone would like to make a donation, large or small, to a local animal shelter in place of purchasing flowers to honor him, David would be grateful and love that. We joked a lot back and forth but he was a good dude. I had been trying to reach out to him and was worried something was wrong. He will be missed.

David was a great friend. I have nothing, but fond memories of David.
You will be missed buddy.

My first memory of Dave is him sitting outside with a guitar and friends around him. He was so friendly and welcoming.

Dave was a solid friend. He was never judgmental and always did what he could to make the world better. He even adopted "snakey" from me, when I couldn't care for him anymore. He played guitar with my son, and came up with some dope tattoo ideas. I haven't met many truly decent humans in my life, but as far as I can tell, Dave was one. I never left an interaction with him feeling worse off. I'm grateful to have known him. I sincerely hope, if there is something other than nothingness after death, that Dave leveled up to a better dimension than the one we're all still stuck in.

Much love brobro,
Hannah

My first year of sobriety I took Dave with me to see Incubus, and after the show when he kneeled down to dig a lighter out of his bag this group of dudes thought he was proposing and started taking pictures and whatnot. It was, from that point on, the night we accidentally got married.
I was also the one who connected him with long branch when my ex said they needed people. Dave changed careers and it was an honor to watch him grow.
So many great memories in such a short time. Can´t wait to celebrate his life.
The last time I hung out with him, we showed up at his mom´s house with a Gar fish and it took both of us together to break that fish down!
