David Bruce Shirey, 78, of Middletown, passed away peacefully at his home on June 25, 2025. He was born June 7, 1947 in Muncie, to the late Frank and Helen (May) Shirey.
Renowned for his humor, Dave possessed a remarkable gift for bringing joy to those who crossed his path. With a comedic flair, a quick wit, and a kind-hearted nature, he created an environment where friends and family felt valued and loved.
With many hobbies and interests, Dave lived life passionately. He had an appreciation for antiques and cherished family heirlooms, often sharing the stories behind them that connected generations. A true enthusiast of classic cars, Dave found joy in both the aesthetic and the mechanical, dedicating hours to working on vehicles and learning about their history. His adventurous side shone through while metal detecting, where he unearthed treasures from the past, including Civil War musketballs, which he proudly showcased as a testament to his love of history.
Music was another expression of Dave’s vibrant spirit. He was particularly fond of classic rock. An accomplished musician, he played both the drums and guitar. Additionally, he delighted in the thrills of RC boats and planes.
Dave was a devoted fan of Notre Dame and a passionate supporter of his hometown of Middletown. He was a MHS 1965 Cossack graduate. Dave was a big supporter of the Middletown Public Library, food pantry, and donated to many other charities, embodying the essence of generosity.
His favorite saying: Uncle Dave wasn’t the life of the party… He WAS the party!
Those left to cherish his memory include his nephew, Larry Benfield; niece, Shannon (Jake) Brown; nephew, Trent Benfield; great niece and nephews, Kodie Benfield, Nicholas Benfield, Sierra Benfield, Tyler Brown, and Austin Brown; his special friend Pam Lane; and many other extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Redman.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, July 3, 2025 at Miller Cemetery in Middletown with Pastor Phil Rogers officiating. Burial will follow. Memorial contributions can be made to the Middletown Public Library, the Middletown Food Pantry, or the National Cancer Society.
