Denise Latour, 63, passed away on April 11, 2025, after a short illness.
A graduate of Riverdale High School, Denise received numerous degrees from UNO and SLU in Hammond. Her academic journey laid the foundation for a distinguished career in education. Her exceptional work as a school counselor was recognized statewide when she was named Louisiana High School Counselor of the Year in 2023.
Denise was known not only for her accomplishments but also for the strength she brought to every role she embraced. A passionate educator and tough loving mother, she balanced compassion with resilience, always striving to uplift those around her. Outside of her professional life, Denise found joy in quilting and traveling.
A devoted member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Denise’s faith was a guiding force throughout her life. It shaped her values and inspired the way she served others-with humility, kindness, and purpose.
Denise loved crawfish - it’s fitting her obituary is printed today, on Good Friday, as thousands celebrate the life of Christ and just as many will spend the weekend reflecting in church and enjoying time with family at seafood boils across the region. She’d love to join you - make sure this paper is used at your boil!
Denise is survived by the love of her life and husband, Rodney Schmaltz, sons Trey, Cody, Jacob, her daughter-in-law Mallory and grandson due to be born in June; Trey's partner Darren Stutes; Denise's mother and father, Althea and Johnny Latour; Brother and sisters-in-law John and Beth, Kenny and Gina; Along with a huge, extended New Orleans family.
