Donald Alwyn Byrd, age 78, of Erwin, NC went to be with his heavenly father on Friday, April 11th, 2025 while at his home.
Don was born in Erwin on May 30th, 1946 as the youngest child of Cornelius Bright Byrd and Vida Lenora Godwin Byrd.
Don graduated from Dunn High School in 1964 and proceeded to join the Army and became a Green Beret in the 82 Airborne Division. After his years of military service, he went on to graduate from Heritage Bible college and become an ordained minister, speaking and teaching in many churches throughout the area.
Don's love for the Lord and His Word, led him to constantly study the Bible and share it along with the gospel to anyone he crossed paths with; never missing an opportunity to talk about God's wonderful mercy and grace.
While married to his late wife, Melba, for 55 years, he owned and operated his own landscaping business for over 30 years. He loved spending time with his family becoming a loving, teaching, and guiding grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed dearly by all those who loved him along with the many he made sure to deliver or send a card to whenever he heard they were sick or needed prayer.
Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his wife, Melba; his parents: Cornelius and Vida Byrd; his brothers: Lindsey Byrd, Ervin Byrd, and Weldon Byrd; and his sisters: Elva Melton and Jean Jobe.
Don is survived by his daughter, Delia McMillan; grandson, Josh McMillan and wife Ashley; two great-grandchildren, Gunner Cadwin McMillan and Rhett Alwyn McMillan; a brother, Reverend Kenneth Bright Byrd and many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
The family will receive friends at the Dunn Funeral Home in Erwin on Wednesday, April 16th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The funeral, officiated by Reverend Kenneth Byrd, will follow at 3:00 pm at the Dunn Funeral Home Chapel located at 904 Lucas Street, Erwin, NC. Burial will follow at Devotional Gardens Cemetery at 5655 Fairgroun Road in Dunn, NC.
Dunn Funeral Home of Erwin is honored to serve the Donald Alwyn Byrd family.
