Mr. Donald Edward "Don" Mathie, 90, died Monday evening (June 24, 2024) at his residence in Nahunta after an extended illness.
He was born April 10, 1934 in Detroit, MI to the late David Scotty Mathie and Iva Grace Hughes Mathie. Don served in the United States Marine Corp, and he was employed as a Georgia State Meat Inspector for 20 years. He retired as the owner and operator of Ivey's Laundry in Waycross. Don deeply loved his family and people, and he especially enjoyed cookouts with them.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Kevin Mathie; two daughters, Karla Mathie and Kymer Mathie; sister, Jackie Smith; and brothers, John Mathie, Tom Rhule and Jim Rhule.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Ginny Mathie of Hoboken; children, Kleve Mathie (Andrea) of Nahunta, Kerry Mathie (Martha) of Nahunta, and Kenny Johns (Cheryl) of Schlatterville; step-children, Jennifer Owens of St. Simon's, Phyllis Harris of Nahunta, and Cindy Herrin of Hortense; 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; sister, Jeanne Mathis of Marshville, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (June 28, 2024) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
