Dora Jean Borden, affectionately known as Dot, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2025, in Fredericksburg Virginia, surrounded by her loving daughter and grandson. Dora was born on September 5, 1940, in Beaufort County North Carolina, to Irene and James Winfield. Together they raised 9 children planting love and the word of God in them as young children. Dora grew up and moved to New York and married Ponce de Leon Borden. Together they raised their children with the love of family, and to always put God first. Surrounded by aunts, Uncles and countless cousins.
Every other weekend there would be a gathering at a family member's house where everyone would laugh, eat really good food, create dance routines and have an awesome time. They were memorable times that meant so much to her. The love of family. Dora continued to follow and strengthen her relationship with her lord and savior and planted the same seed for God's love in her children. When her children grew up to become adults, they would often reach out to her for advice from time to time. She would always listen and not judge. Her famous words of wisdom would be Just pray about it, take it to God, he'll let you know what to do. That's it, straight to the point. In other words, teaching her children to strengthen their faith and to cast all of their cares and worries upon the Lord and he will work it out. words that are still followed today.
Dora was a beloved member of the Woodstock Free Will Baptist Church in North Carolina, where she held a life membership. Although she was quiet and shy most of the time, she managed to participate in a church program here and there by reciting a poem whenever it was asked of her. This began a new journey for her. Becoming closer to her church family, growing in her faith and strengthening her relationship with God. Dora has dedicated much of her life to her family. As a devoted homemaker, mother, and grandmother, she filled her home with love as she had an innate ability to bring warmth and comfort leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ponce Borden, her brothers, Jesse, Robert and Carl. Her sister, Ivy and her son, Kenny. Dora is survived by her children, "Lisa, Zelda, Reggie and Dwayne, her sisters Gwen, Patricia and her brother Russell. 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends. Dora's memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be dearly missed. Another angel has earned her wings.
