On Sunday, July 20th, Dr. James F. Abel, Jr. passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side, going home to be with the Lord.
Born on October 27, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Abel was the son of the late James and Kathryn Abel. He was raised in Saddle Brook, New Jersey, and graduated from Saddle Brook High School in 1967. His academic journey reflected a lifelong commitment to education: he earned an Associate’s Degree from Rockland Community College (NY), a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Montclair State University, a Master’s Degree in School Psychology from Edinboro University, and a Doctorate in Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Abel began his career as a school psychologist in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and went on to serve in the Pocono Mountain School District, Sussex Technical High School, Cape Henlopen Consortium, and finally the Capital School District, from which he retired in 2013.
He was an active member of the Delaware Association of School Psychologists (D.A.S.P.), serving as its president from 1996 to 1997. Known for his creativity and compassion, Dr. Abel often used magic tricks as part of his counseling to engage and uplift students.
In retirement, he remained devoted to service, volunteering alongside his therapy dog, Bailey, at Bayhealth Sussex Campus and the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford. He also enjoyed kayaking, canoeing, gardening, and hiking with the Easy Striders Hiking Club.
Dr. Abel is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Colleen Abel; his children: Brendan Abel, Andrew Abel and his wife Toni Tipton, and Daniel Abel and his fiancée Renee Smith; his grandchildren: Shane, Parker, and Eve Abel; and his brother, Raymond Abel.
