Ed Baldwin died on June 10, 2023 at his home in Dalton, Georgia after a long battle with cancer. The only child of his parents, Dr. Edward Braswell Baldwin and Irene Cooke Bennett, he was born in Florence, Alabama on June 2, 1936. Ed grew up in Murfreesboro Tennessee. He did his undergraduate work in Biology and Chemistry along with a minor in Music at Middle Tennessee State University, where his father was on the faculty, and his graduate work in Chemistry at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. There he met and married the love of his life and his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Trent. Ed went to work for Fieldcrest Mills in Eden, North Carolina in 1959, and was employed in that industry for nearly 30 years. Textile manufacturing brought him to Dalton in 1980. He became a recognized expert in textile quality control, earning numerous awards.
Ed's true passion in life was music, particularly choral performance. He had a magnificent voice, which he used for the glory of God in many church choirs over the years. He was choirmaster at St. John's Methodist Church in Buena Vista, Virginia for 10 years. His lifelong love of music was evidenced by his position as the director for The Sounds of Joy at Dalton First United Methodist Church until just weeks before his death.
Ed was a member of the Dalton Golf and Country Club for many years. He delivered Meals on Wheels and mentored people recovering from substance abuse, touching countless lives. He was a family man and a consummate gentleman, in every sense of that long-forgotten word. He will be sorely missed by those who survive him: his wife, Lib Baldwin; his daughter and son in law, David and Elizabeth Robinson, with their children David, Sarah and Andrew Tobey, and Katherine, and great-grandson Kemp Tobey, all of Richmond, Virginia; his son and daughter in law, Edward Braswell Baldwin III and Tish with their sons Jay, Brock and Trenton, all of Nashville, Tennessee; and his son and daughter in law William Trent
Baldwin and Marci with their children Trent and Brooke Baldwin, of Ringgold, Georgia. Also surviving to mourn his passing are nieces Lisa Trent, Julia Hibbing and Sharon Kellogg, all of Phoenix, Arizona and nephew David Trent of Midlothian, Texas.
The family will receive visitors at Dalton First United Methodist Church at 1 pm on Wednesday, June 14th, 2023. A funeral will be held immediately following at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Dalton First United Methodist Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to independently owned and operated Dalton Funeral Home, 620 S. Glenwood Ave. Dalton, GA 30721; 706-529-5371.
