Eleanor, of Farmington, a beloved wife, cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend, unexpectedly entered eternal life on Monday morning, January 8, 2024, at the Woodhaven Retirement Community in Livonia. She was 94 years old. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a lifetime of cherished memories.
Eleanor's journey began in
Ferndale, MI, on December 17, 1929, born to the late Philip and Olive (Thomas) Watson, where she enjoyed ice skating and playing softball with the boys in her neighborhood. She graduated from Lincoln High School and her passion for education led her to Albion College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in teaching. It was at Albion that she met her beloved Don, and the two wed on August 16, 1952, at the Ferndale United Methodist Church. Their love story began when they were seated together in chapel due to the alphabetical arrangement of their last names, a connection that blossomed into a lifetime of shared joys and adventures.
Before starting a family, Eleanor put her degree to use and taught school. Later, she lent her skills to assist at Don's dental practice in Farmington. A woman of many talents, she was a skilled seamstress, known for her creativity and attention to detail. Her wit, humor, and vivacious spirit made her the life of every party. Her early love for sports cars was also evident, especially her pride and joy, a '53 MG TD.
Members of the Muskegon Yacht Club, Eleanor shared a passion for sailing with Don, a love that led her to win first place in the Women's Doublehanded Championship Race from Muskegon to White Lake. Together they even explored the Caribbean on a bare boat charters.
Moreover, as a proud member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Eleanor instilled a sense of boating safety even in Claire and Beth. Their sense of adventure extended globally as members of the Nomads Travel Club, allowing them to circle the world together.
Eleanor also enjoyed music and singing, actively participating in Albion's choir. Her passion for percussion instruments, especially the bongos, added a musical touch to beach parties, creating lasting memories for those fortunate enough to be part of them.
An accomplished cook, Eleanor loved entertaining and hosting dinner parties. She took great care in everything she did, displaying a meticulous and detail-oriented approach. As a devoted and wise mother, she was unpretentious and very protective of her family.
Eleanor was a dedicated volunteer and contributed her time to the First United Methodist Church in Farmington, including crafting baby hats for those in need. Her grandchildren fondly remember the joyous moments spent together, filled with crafts and activities carefully orchestrated by their grandmother.
Eleanor's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. May she find eternal peace, surrounded by the gentle waves she so adored.
Surviving are her devoted husband of over 71 years, Donald; beloved daughters, Claire (John) Tryon and Elizabeth "Beth" (Daniel) Kirby; cherished grandchildren, Curtis and Stephanie Kirby, Julia Wells and Leslie (Benjamin) Chrisom, by marriage, Shannon (Charles) Blaeske and Shelby (Benjamin) Kieffer; and great-grandchildren, Eleanor Wells, Madison and Juliette Chrisom, Breiden, Gavin and Fiona Blaeske, and Judah, Thomas and Margot Kieffer.
