Elma L. Halsrud, 100, of Humboldt, formerly of Rutland, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024 in the Long Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.
Elma was born May 10, 1923 in Rutland, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Olive Smith. She was raised and educated in the Rutland area and graduated from Bradgate High School. Elma was united in marriage to Alvin Merle Halsrud on March 26, 1944. The couple farmed with Merle’s parents until Merle was drafted into the United States Army. The couple moved to Little Rock, Arkansas and returned to Iowa following WWII. The couple farmed in the Bradgate and Rutland area for over 40 years. In retirement they moved to Humboldt and continued to assist family with farming. Elma was very involved in the Bradgate Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. She enjoyed playing the piano, collecting baskets, tending her garden, canning, raising chickens for the eggs and crocheting. She and Merle loved to travel, visiting Germany, Hawaii, California, Washington D.C. and many bus trips with the bank.
She is survived by her son Gary Halsrud of Rutland, daughter Judy (Ken) Hoodjer of Clarksville, Iowa and daughter-in-law Cathy Halsrud of Gilmore City, her grandchildren; Tammy (Travis) McKimmey, Jason (Lacy) Halsrud, Joe (Kayla) Halsrud, Dennise (John) Terwilliger, Jennifer Johnson, Steve (Ashley) Hoodjer and Matt (Megan) Hoodjer, her great-grandchildren; Tyler (Kennedy), Taylor (Ian) Tanner, Taryn, Tyson (Kaylee) Kennedy, Carson, Montgomery, Krystalle, Morgan, Casey, Jaxson, RaeLynn, Bennett, Sophia, Alexander & Josiah and her great-great grandchildren Phoenix and Piper. She was preceded in death by her husband Merle, parents, son Jimmie, daughter-in-law Carole, brothers Donald, Harvey and Vern, two infant brothers and two grandchildren Jesse and Jeffery.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 17th and visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time at Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service in Humboldt is in charge of the arrangements. www.masonlindhart.com
