Rev. Eugene Emil Scheich, 87, a senior priest of 56 years for the Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville, passed away peacefully Friday, August 26, 2022. Known for his sermons of love and laughter, he was affectionately called Fr. Gene. He was the first born child of Bernice Eugenia Delph Scheich and Joseph W. Scheich on September 1, 1934. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mary Florence and a brother John Scheich.
Father Gene is survived by his sisters, Sr. Renee Scheich, RGF, Sisters of the Good Shepherd, Bridgeton, MO; Kathy Abel (Gerry), Mount Pleasant, SC, Rose Anne Scheich, Donna Riggle (Michael); a brother Joseph Scheich (Diana); sister-in-law Joann Scheich and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends.
He was a graduate of Holy Cross Grade School, Flaget High School and Bellarmine College. Fr. Gene honorably served two years in the U. S. Army, before his seminary training at St. Mary s (1959-1962) and St. Maur s (1962-1966).
He was ordained into the priesthood May 14, 1966 and his first Mass was at St. Bernard Church, as was his last. His priest assignments include St. Simon & Jude, Holy Trinity, St. Jerome, St. Augustine and St. Matthias.
Fr. Gene loved being a priest, and as a senior priest he continued to serve whenever and wherever he was needed. He had many awards, accomplishments and accolades, but we remember him most for his unconditional love to all people. He was completely unpretentious, compassionate, inclusive, generous, quick thinker, witty, trusting, humble and most of all unconditionally loving to all.
Fr. Gene was the person we all aspire to be, if life didn t keep getting in the way.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, September 1st (his birthday) at 11 a.m. from St. Bernard Catholic Church, 7500 Tangelo Drive, with visitation preceding the Mass at 9:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow. Fr. Gene has requested that his earthly remains be cremated and buried among his fellow clergy in the Priests section at Calvary Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank all the members of Hosparus Health for their wonderful love, care and expertise. Those persons wishing to honor Fr. Gene may make a donation to Hosparus. Ratterman and Sons on Bardstown Road is caring for Fr. Gene and his family. Online condolences may be shared at www.ratterman.com.

Father Gene was an amazing man that helped me become the person of christ that I am today. He always preached of love and did wonderful things for our parish at St. Mathias. The world was literally a better place with him in it. RIP my dear mentor.

Marilyn, I was a year behind you at Assumption & enjoyed some nice visits to your home. I heard your brother preach at St. Augustine, where he once said certain people will be surprised when they get to Heaven & find out God is a woman! My condolences to your family.
