On Wednesday, November 22, 2023, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ welcomed Eugene Frank Schreiber home to be with his loving wife Shirley. He was 95 years old.
Eugene (Grandpa Fonz) was born on June 7, 1928, to Ervin and Viola (Rueckert) Schreiber in Boozetown. He was baptized on August 5, 1928, at Immanuel Lutheran Church-White Clay Lake, and confirmed on April 26, 1942, at St. John's-Green Valley.
Eugene graduated from Bonduel High School in May of 1946. Following high school, he enjoyed playing softball with the local boys at the ball diamond in Boozetown. Eugene decided to follow in his father's and grandfather's footsteps and decided to become a cheesemaker. He attended the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture in Madison, Wisconsin, enrolling in the Cheesemaker Program, graduating on April 9, 1947, as a Master Cheesemaker.
He married Shirley M. Seiler in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on January 30, 1949. She preceded him in death on September 28, 2008. Together they raised three children: Glenn (Nancy) Schreiber, Cecil; Sandra (Jerry) Orlando, Bonduel; and Gregg (Stephanie) Schreiber, Depere.
After graduation from the cheesemakers' course in Madison, Eugene began working in the cheese making business with his father. After his father's untimely death in 1955 at the age of 52, he was left with a huge decision. He then went into partnership with his younger brother Roger and remained in the business until 1960, when the operation was sold.
Gene then worked for Village Farm Dairy in Bonduel for a short time, then at Graf Creamery for several years, and finally for Thorsen Foods in Shawano, working in the warehouse and then becoming a salesman for them. Thorsen Foods was eventually purchased by Reinhart Foods, and Gene remained a salesman with them until his retirement in 1990.
Gene was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church-White Clay Lake and was very active, serving as Chairman, Recording Secretary, and Elder and attending Bible Study and church regularly.
Gene was also very active in the Cecil Lions Club and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. This Fellowship Award is the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. This award is given for exemplary service to the Club and the community which it serves.
After retirement, Gene and Shirley spent time traveling, playing cards, and spending enormous amounts of time with their four older grandchildren, Tasha and Nathan Orlando and Tennille and Tabitha Schreiber, at a campground and taking then on yearly mystery trips. One of Gene's favorite trips was a trip to the Cave of the Mounds.
Eugene is survived by his children, Glenn (Nancy) Schreiber, Sandra (Jerry) Orlando, and Gregg (Stephanie) Schreiber; his brother, Roger Schreiber, Darboy; his brother-in-law, Dale Seiler, Gallatin, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Tasha (Tim) Treptow, Tennille (Scott) Cheslock, Nathan (Rachael) Orlando, Tabitha (Dan) Bartels, Travis (Melissa) Schreiber, Melissa (Nathan) Zschaechner, and Samantha Schreiber; 14 great-grandchildren, Ellie, Nick, and Emi Treptow, Dayton (Nick) Schultz, Colten Rauterkus, Kaitlyn and Griffin ("Murphy") Orlando, Mason and Morgan Zschaechner, Elsie, Isla, and Eva Bartels, Carson and Liam Schreiber; and two great-great-grandchildren, Briar and Blake Schultz; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, his parents, his parents-in-law, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Sally Schreiber, Harold and Lillian Seiler, Bob and Sally Little, Ray Sporer, and Maxine Seiler.
A funeral service for Eugene will be held at 11:00am on Friday, December 1, 2023, at Immanuel Lutheran Church-White Clay Lake, Cecil, with visitation beginning at 9:00am, until the time of service. Pastor Craig Nehring will be officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery following services. Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
Thank you to Gene for all the wonderful years as a father, grandpa, great-grandpa, great-great grandpa, and friend. Say "hi" to Grandma Fonz and tell her how much we "shurlee" miss her.
A special thank you to Pastor Craig Nehring, Hospice, and Nurse Tina.
In lieu of flowers, you may direct memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church or to a food pantry of your choice.
