Evelyn Torres, (aka "Pancha" and "Eva"), 88, passed away peacefully to the sounds of her son reading prayers of comfort, peace, and healing, at Paul House & Healthcare Center on August 21, 2024.
Born in Juncos, Puerto Rico, Evelyn earned her degree in Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan and worked as a Kindergarten teacher in San Lorenzo. One early morning, Evelyn was walking to work and stumbled across a traffic accident on the lone bridge into town. Ignoring the blockade, she was stopped by a ruggedly handsome police officer. The couple started dating. Evelyn was impressed that he was not scared off by her mother and became the love of his life.
The couple came to Chicago for better opportunities landing in Lincoln Park and Columbus Park, then Little Italy and Irving Park. Evelyn worked on a binding machine at a Betty Crocker cookbook factory and later at a box fan factory, boxing fans.
She loved sweets, dogs and cats, and children (especially mischievous ones, think Calvin & Hobbes), and although she did not attend church, Evelyn was quite spiritual and a devotee of St. Jude.
Evelyn was also fond of her elder son's dogs: Fergus the rat/fox-terrier mix and the late Caffrey the Wheaten terrier (we will never forget the time she dressed him in her bra).
Loving mother of Edward Ike (Peggy Titterington) Velazquez of Chicago and Orlando (Bethina) Velazquez of Aurora. Proud grandmother ("abuela") of Julian Valdemar Velazquez.
Preceded in death by her former partner Emiliano Davila Velazquez and parents Marcelina Ares and Carmelo Torres.
A memorial mass will be held 12noon Saturday, September 14, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church 620 Fifth Street, Aurora IL.
A celebration of life is also being planned in the city of Chicago. Please check back to this website for information as it becomes available.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to https://www.stjude.org/.
