Flossie Mae Doyle was born in Caddo Gap, AR on September 14, 1927, and passed away in Hot Springs, AR on August 18, 2024. Her life spanned 96 years and 11 months. Her parents were Oscar Richard Gladden and Odie Mae Robbins Gladden. She married the love of her life, Claude Doyle, on April 14. 1947 in Skene, MS. They met when she was 12. She told her sisters and friends, "I'm going to marry Claude one day." And she did, they had celebrated 76 years of marriage before Claude passed January 2024. Family and church were her lifetime focus.
Flossie loved company, especially her sisters. Flossie was either trying to feed you or cleaning up after you. Flossie was mostly a career homemaker but dedicated 10 years to JC Penney. Even this year, at 96, she was regularly on her riding lawn mower and picked up every stick or branch that had fallen. She never shied away from hard work and was a good role model for her children and grandchildren.
As faithful members of Mill Creek Baptist Church for over 45 years, Flossie would bake pecan pies for the annual fundraising auctions, causing Claude to spend a lot to take them back home. Occasionally, Claude would allow someone to outbid him on one. As the church grew, Flossie didn't hesitate to volunteer. She could be found on ladders painting or on the roof applying new shingles. Middle aged adults fondly recall when "Miss Flossie" watched them in the nursery or taught them Sunday School.
While Claude was credited for the garden, it was Flossie who took what God provided and either cooked or preserved it for a future meal. She was fond of vegetables, don't think there was a veggie she wouldn't eat. The canned goods fed many a mouth over the decades. Venison stew was a regular menu option. Her spaghetti and meatballs recipe acquired from an Italian friend from New Jersey in 1947 are legendary to the Doyle clan.
Flossie is survived by her four children: Dennis Doyle, Glavon Webster (James), Joyce Sanden (Randal), and Garland Doyle. There were seven children, 20 great grandchildren, and 2 great great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are provided by Caruth-Hale Funeral Home on Section Line Road in Hot Springs, AR. Visitation is at 1:00 on Saturday, August 31 with the service following at 2:00. Burial is at the Crestview Cemetery on Hwy 70 East.
