Frank E. Kohnke, 98, of Durand, IL died at 9:35 p.m., Thursday, July 11, 2024 in Medina Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. He was born December 11, 1925 in Oshkosh, WI. He enlisted in the military on his 16th birthday. As a paratrooper, he served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne, 502nd PIR Unit, known as the "5-0 Deuce". They participated in D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and the acquisition of Berghof, Hitler's home in the Bavarian Alps, in 1945. He received several medals, including Purple Hearts, for his services and would come out of the war as Private First Class.
Frank married Barbara in in the 60's. Frank owned operated the Ski Hut Lounge, which had two locations, for 35 years in Milwaukee, WI.
Survivors include five children, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A memorial Ceremony will be held at 12:00 p.m., on Saturday, July 20, 2024 in McCorkle Funeral Home -Durand Chapel, 101 Main St. Durand, IL. Cremation Rites to be Accorded. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Saturday.

One of the first times I met Frank he said to me " you know why I like you"? I said why and he said "cause you´re shorter than me and there´s no one as short as I am." A great, funny and sweet man who is going to be greatly missed!
