With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Franz Douglas Spalding, a man whose kindness, humor, and unwavering love left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Franz passed away surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, hard work, and boundless compassion.
Born in 1961, Franz graduated from Atherton High School in 1979 and then attended the University of Louisville. He built a life centered around family, hard work, and a light-hearted nature. In 1984, he married the love of his life, Mary Lincoln Spalding, and together they shared 40 beautiful years of marriage. In 1998, they welcomed their daughter, Renee Spalding, who was his greatest joy and the light of his life.
Franz was the proud owner of Spalding Drapery Services before becoming an operator for the Louver Shop of Kentuckiana. His work ethic was unmatched—always going above and beyond, not just for his family, but for anyone who needed a helping hand. He never met a stranger, and no matter where he went, he always found a familiar face. His circle of people was vast because his heart was open to all.
He was a devoted son, a loving husband, and the most caring father one could ever ask for. Beneath his mischievous humor was a gentle strength that allowed him to listen with genuine empathy and without judgment. His quick wit could make anyone laugh, but it was his kindness that made people feel truly seen and valued.
Franz was preceded in death by his parents, John Verne Spalding and Sally Groth Spalding; as well as his beloved siblings, Elisa Spalding and John Verne Spalding II.
Franz is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter, Renee; and his sisters, Sandy Lavender and Susan Sutherland; and a host of family and friends.
It is a blessing to love so deeply, but with that love comes the depth of grief we now carry. No amount of preparation could have readied us for this loss. Letting go is the hardest part, but we take comfort in knowing his battle is over, and he is now at peace.
We will miss him always.
