Frederick A. Haase, age 75, passed away Monday, February 3rd, 2025, at his home in
Loudon, TN.
Born and raised in South Bend, IN, Fred was the oldest of two children. His father was an IndyCar engineer, and Fred developed a love for racing at a young age while roaming Gasoline Alley. Throughout his life, attending the Indy500 was the highlight of his year. Fred was a stoic man, but on every Sunday of Memorial Day weekend when the engines fired, he was filled with zestful enthusiasm. It was the only Sunday of the year when church attendance became optional. Fred attended Wabash College and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Latin. He continued his post-graduate education at the University of Washington-St. Louis. After graduating, he was hired by the Culver Academies to teach Latin. Other than a short-lived teenage stint with Mayflower Moving, it was his first and only job. For 43 years, Fred taught Latin, Economics, and served as the foreign language department chair. He coached the boys' golf team and established the girls' golf team at Culver in 1982. A true giant in The Culver Academies' history, Fred, or "Pater" as he was known to his students, held the W.A. Moncrief Chair of Free Enterprise Economics and was a Batten Fellow. He is one of only a few Culver faculty members to receive all three of its prestigious awards- the Delmar T. Spivey Award, Mark Kaser Award, and John Mars Award. He was beloved by his students, and the tone of his resounding voice will always echo through Gignilliat Hall. In 1972, Fred met Nancy Bernet and knew immediately she was the woman he would marry. A meticulously thoughtful man who was not prone to act rashly, proposing to Nancy was undoubtedly his fastest (and best) decision. Within a few months, they were engaged and went on to spend over 51 years as husband and wife. Fred was a man with very defined priorities in life- his faith, his family, and the game of golf. He gladly sacrificed the scant free time he had to take his children to the course and instilled his love for the game with them. To Fred, his relationship with Jesus always came first. A man of great faith, he was a devout Lutheran and served full heartedly at his congregations. He loved his church families at Our Redeemer in Knox, Indiana and Grace Lutheran in Knoxville, Tennessee. 2 Timothy 4:7 reads, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful." Fred Haase embodied this verse with his actions, words, and deeds. Always faithful, always keeping his eyes on Jesus. He is preceded in death by his parents. Fred is survived by his wife, Nancy (Bernet) Haase; sons, David and Samantha Haase and Ryan Haase; daughter, Caroline Hegg; grandchildren, Reagan Haase, Max Haase and Sloane Haase; brother, Michael Haase; several nieces and nephews. Services honoring and remembering Fred Haase will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday February 8, 2025, at Grace Lutheran Church, 9076 Middlebrook Pike, Knoxville, TN. 37923. The family will receive friends at 12:00 noon prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The
National Kidney Foundation (www.kidney.org) or to the
