Gary was involved in many activities while in school, including Chorus, Marching Band, Concert Band, Baseball, and Basketball. Following graduation, Gary was a Park Ranger at Blue Knob State Park in the Bedford County, PA area before attending college at Shippensburg University for two years, and then transferring and graduating from Edinboro State College with a BS in Music Education in 1977. While at Edinboro, Gary was involved in many music activities including the Madrigal Singers and was a founding father of Edinboro's Lambda Gamma Chapter of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity.
Gary was a Music and Driver Education teacher in the Northwestern School District for 35 years, retiring in 2012. He began his career teaching 5th and 6th Grade Bands at NW Elementary and West Springfield Elementary. He then taught Music classes at the NW Jr. High/Middle School, along with Girls Chorus, the 6th Grade Choruses, and the 7th and 8th Grade Chorus. Gary also directed the Senior High Chorus, 9th through 12th Grades, at NW Senior High School along with teaching classroom Driver Education. Gary conducted several concerts for the parents and community each year with all of his Choral groups along with his auditioned singing group, The Fantasia Singers, who were well known for their performances in and around the Erie County community. Gary was also the Advisor for the Tri-M Music Honor Society at NW, which was one of the oldest Chapters in the state of PA. It is an organization which is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership. Gary also assisted with the NW Marching Band in his early years, along with being assistant director and music director of several musicals at the school.
Gary was a member of the PMEA, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association of which he was the District 2 President, Vice-President, Second Vice-President, along with holding many other offices and committees. Gary had the privilege to have many of his students be selected over the years to attend many PMEA District, Regional, and State Events, and a few All-Eastern Choral Events as well. Gary hosted the PMEA Jr. District Choral Festival in 1987, and the PMEA Sr. District Choral Festival in 2002 at Northwestern Senior High School.
Gary was also a member of PSEA, Pennsylvania State Education Association, and NEA, Northwestern Education Association.
Gary was an officer and coach for the Northwestern Little League for many years. He coached Girls Big League Softball for 10 years, and helped coach Boys Baseball from T-Ball through Big League Baseball for teams that his son participated in. Gary also coached 7th & 8th Grade Boys Basketball at NW Jr. High/Middle School for several years, and he participated in and headed up the Church League Basketball and Softball Leagues in the NW community for many years.

He was recognized for his many years of encouraging students in Music and the Performing Arts and was awarded the Doris Snell Award from the Erie Playhouse in 2018. He also performed in many shows in the NW Summer Theater and NW Spring Dinner Theater.
Following his Retirement, Gary, along with his wife, Lisa, participated in the Senior Bowling League at Edinboro Lanes and Westway Lanes, and they attended many activities sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association of Greater PA, at Gannon, Erie Art Museum, UPMC Hamot, The Regency, and the Memory Cafe at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Erie.
Gary attended and was a member of the Fishertown Community Bible Church in Fishertown, PA growing up as a child, and then when he moved to the Northwestern Community in 1977, he attended and became a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Albion, PA where Gary directed the Choralaires Teen Choir, and participated in the Adult Chancel Choir for several years.

We want to give a special "Thank You" to all of the Staff of both the Crawford County Care Center and Interim Hospice for all of the love and care that they have shown to Gary over these last few years. Music always stayed with Gary. He was known for his daily singing and serenading his caregivers on a regular basis.
"When words fail, Music speaks."
~ Hans Christian Andersen
Gary was well known for his involvement in school, church, and community activities in the Northwestern School District, and Erie County, but he was above all a wonderful husband and father. He and Lisa were a team like no other, along with their son, Brendan. The three of them spent many nights setting up, decorating (and tearing down afterwards) the stage for Gary's many concerts and performances each school year over their 35 years of marriage. Lisa, Brendan, and Family would like to say,
"We Love You, Gary, Dad, Grandpa!!!
Thank you for the Music!!
The song has ended, but the melody will linger on in our hearts forever."

Gary and I were classmates at CRHS from 7th grade until we graduated. He always had a smile on his face and had such incredible musical talents...both vocally and instrumentally. I remember his printing was meticulous and our math teacher pleaded for him to be less precise in his printing so he could finish a test by the end of the period. All those lives touched by him will always have fond memories.

My deepest sympathies and prayers. Gary was a wonderful man that I am so glad I got to meet and have him teach my children. He was such an inspiration to all who knew him.
My favorite memory of Gary is during Brendan´s senior year(I believe), the last concert of the year and Brendan did a surprise song at the end that brought tears to everyone there´s eyes. He sang Rodney Atkinson - Watching you!

i met mr. daughterty when i moved to pennsylvania in 7th grade, when i joined chorus and learned i can do both soprano and alto. he taught me a huge range my voice could do that i never knew. he helped me, gave me confidence, and was there for me to confide in whenever i was going through problems at home. he was simply the greatest. when i got to high school and realized he was also going to be in high school teaching chorus there as well, i was so happy. he was my comfort teacher. he was the ONLY one that cared. my mom died when i was a sophomore and he was there. when i didn´t have any money for lunch, he was there. when i wanted to sit and learn about music history, he was there. when my dad left me alone after my mom died, and i lived by myself, he was there for me to vent too. he has been on my mind for a long time and i have wondered about him, since i moved to georgia after high school. and i am so sad that i haven´t been able to stay in touch. learning this news today truly has my heartbroken and i am a mess. i plan on getting a memorial music tattoo in his honor because he truly meant that much to me. he was the only teacher that ever gave me a chance, that ever listened, and joked with me and laughed with me, and that all honestly helped me pushed through some of the worst years i´ve ever went through. he deserves the happiest and most musical heaven there is.

My sincere condolences, Lisa, Brendan, and family. I pray that you are comforted during this time of grief. Mr. D was a wonderful teacher who encouraged us to learn, practice, and most of all, enjoy music. He instilled confidence in young people and gave us opportunities to explore our talents and interests. I´m grateful for all I learned and experienced in his Chorus classes and Fantasia Singers. I hope the memories shared here are a blessing.

My deepest condolences to Lisa, Brendan, and family. I feel like I grew up with Mr. Daugherty. I played my early softball years on the Philly´s he coached, participated in band, choir, theater, and fantasia. He had an infectious personality that made you want to be around him. He made you feel happy and was always supportive and encouraging. He really encouraged my spark for singing, and through his talent in teaching, probably allowed me to make college choir, sing in Carnegie hall, and with the Erie Philharmonic Choir. He touched and elevated so many lives which leaves a beautiful legacy

He was my driver's education teacher in school. Gary was amazed at an early age how I was able to ace drivers ed. Gary and I shared the court in the church basketball league and he always had the best attitude. I learned early on how to be a good student. I didn't always listen however Gary was very easy to learn from. and took the time necessary to teach.

Dear family, I am so, so sorry for your struggles and your loss. Gary was a good teacher and loving man. We sometimes question the fairness of life's difficulties because we love with our whole heart; no one wants to see someone struggle. It is our faith, I'm sure you'll agree, that binds us together mending the hole left by one's absence. I pray that your wonderful memories of Gary will comfort you always. God bless your family.

Mr Daugherty was an amazing teacher. I remember his kind heart and love for music. I was his student for seven years and I loved all my classes with him. I always felt so encouraged by him to keep singing, and it was a true passion for him to see his students learn to love it like I did. Praying for all of his loved ones during this time.
