Obituary
George Elmer Chandler was born on April 21, 1937, in Melfa, Virginia. He was the second of eight children, born to the late Elijah and Elnora Chandler. His siblings Elijah "Chip" Jr. and James "Duke" preceded him in death. He received his primary and secondary education in the Accomack County school system. He also received various leadership, aircraft maintenance, and business training from the United States Air Force and the Boeing Corporation. Having the benefits of God-fearing parents, George heard the story of Jesus at an early age and desired to follow Him. As a result, he became a life-long disciple of the Churches of Christ in his early twenties.
In September of 1958, at 21, he joined the United States Air Force specializing in aircraft maintenance, beginning the start of a thirty-year career that would take him and his family worldwide, protecting and defending the United States and its allies, culminating in him achieving the rank of Chief Master Sergeant (E-9).
On September 14, 1960, he married Juanita Perry (lovingly known to family as "Miss America") from Newport News, VA. To this blessed union, two children were born, George II and Darlene Michelle. He loved his bride, children, and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with them, fishing, sporting events, traveling, and eating chicken wings! George had an outgoing demeanor; everyone was his friend, and he was always willing to lend a hand when needed. In addition, he had a quiet wisdom that let you know the error of your ways in a loving, gentle way.
Dad was a blessing and provider to family and friends. He was unselfish and always there when you needed him. Cherishing George's memory are his children, George II (Tamara) and Darlene Groce (Mark); five grandchildren Alexis Mackin (Keegan), Matthew Groce, Grant Chandler, Kaylee Groce, and Andrew Chandler; two brothers, Nelson (Dorin), and Charles (Margaret); three sisters, Barbara Chandler, Celestine Beckett (Andrew), and Survilla Mitchell (Fred), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who genuinely love and will miss him.
A funeral service will be 12:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at Wyoming Church, 216 Wyoming Mill Road, Dover, DE 19904 where there will be a viewing from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. Tuesday. A committal service, with military honors, will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 22, 2023 at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE 19966.
