George R. Grandell, 87, of Middlebury, passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Waterbury Hospital after a short illness. He was the loving husband of Virginia (Blackburn) Grandell of sixty-five years.
George was born in Waterbury, CT to Ellen and John Grandell on January 9, 1936. He graduated from Leavenworth High School in Waterbury, and received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Connecticut in 1958. At the University of Connecticut, he was a founding member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was also in the ROTC program and after college joined the navy and served 8 years in the naval reserves. In addition, he was also a volunteer fireman in Middlebury.
George was an Application Engineer and worked at Waterbury Farrel, and also for T. Sendzimer Co., retiring at age sixty-seven.
George was an active member of the Middlebury Congregational Church, where he served in many capacities, including Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Head Usher and Superintendent of Sunday School. He was also a Mason and was raised in King Solomon's Lodge No. 7 in Woodbury, CT, where he was a member for 65 years. He became a Master of the Lodge in 1967, and was a 32nd degree Master Mason. He also served as Secretary of his lodge for many years.
He enjoyed boating, fishing, camping and golf. George was a family man and was very active in his children's activities and sports.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Grandell, of Middlebury, whom he adored. He also leaves his children, Donna Grandell Doty and her late husband, Carl Doty Jr. of Middlebury, sons Robert Grandell and wife Doreen of Rocky Hill, and Richard Grandell and wife Paula of Wolcott. He also leaves four grandchildren, Michael Doty of Houston, TX, Jason Grandell of Wolcott, Emily Grandell of Boston, MA and Megan Grandell of Cromwell. George was very proud of his children and grandchildren.
Arrangements: Calling hours for George will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023, from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. at Brookside Memorial, the Albini Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 200 Benson Road, Middlebury, CT, followed directly by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the Middlebury Congregational Church, 1242 Whittemore Rd, Middlebury. Burial will follow at Middlebury Cemetery.
