George E. ("Skip") Stigger, III died on the 14th day of September 2023, in Louisville. Skip and his late wife, Kempie, in 2021 moved from coastal Georgia to Miralea, Masonic Home, to be closer to family.
He was born in Henderson, KY on November 7, 1938, the son of George E. and Lucie Lambert Stigger. He graduated high school from Kentucky Military Institute in 1956, attended and graduated from the University of Florida in 1960 where he was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and from the University of Kentucky School of Law in 1963.
While in high school, he repeated as the Kentucky State High School Golf Champion in 1956, a feat that would not be duplicated for another 50 years. He attended college on a golf scholarship and was captain of the UF team which finished second in the 1960 NCAA. Skip also won the Kentucky Amateur Golf Championship in 1960. He was inducted into the Kentucky Country Day Athletic Hall of Fame and its Royal Bearcat Society.
Skip practiced law for 58 years as a member of the Kentucky Bar Association with a concentration in the area of coal, oil and gas, and mineral related litigation. He took particular pride in representing the small landowners throughout Kentucky against the mineral companies seeking to ensure that the landowners were paid the full amount of royalty to which they were entitled.
Skip was predeceased by his parents, a son, Craig H. Stigger, and his beloved wife of 60 years, Martha Kemp Stigger. He is survived by a son, G. Bruce Stigger (Cara), a grandson, G. Benjamin Stigger (Alexandria), a granddaughter, Elizabeth M. Gray (Will), and a great-granddaughter, Ivy Gray.
He was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church and the Republican Party.
To honor Skip's memory, a celebration of his life will be held at a time and venue to be determined.
Memorial gifts in Skip's name may be made to the Animal Care Society, 12207 Westport Road, Louisville, KY 40245.
