George H. Torrey, 93, passed away on June 24, 2025, at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, Massachusetts.
He was born in Quincy on January 22, 1932, to William Francis Torrey Jr. and Dorothy Hammond Torrey. He attended the Mass. Maritime Academy, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree. He then went on to be certified as Merchant Seamen, 1st Engineer. For years he traveled around the world on steam ships working as an engineer. He retired in 1987 but continued to enjoy the sea with his sailboat. He sailed up and down the eastern coast from Maine to New York, often sailing by himself. He was a long-term member of the South Shore Yacht Club. He spent his last few years at the Allerton House in Weymouth, where he enjoyed the dinners, the music and telling stories with the staff. In the last weeks he was blessed with care by the members of Norwell VNA and Hospice.
A graveside service will be held at the Fairmount Cemetery in Weymouth on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in George's name to the charitable organization of one's choice.
