NORTH ATTLEBORO – Gregory S. Pion, 76, a resident of North Attleboro since 1966, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2024, surrounded by his family at the Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, MA. He was the beloved husband of Janet S. (Poirier) Pion, to whom he was wed on October 22, 1966.
Born in Attleboro, MA, on January 2, 1948, he was the loving son of the late Donat E. Pion and Minetta L. (Cate) Pion. Greg grew up in Attleboro and was a 1965 graduate of Bishop Feehan High School. He went on to study surveying and construction at the Franklin Institute in Boston.
Greg had a distinguished career as the Chief Resident Engineer at Weston & Sampson, where he worked for 38 years before retiring in 2018. Even after retirement, he continued to contribute his expertise part-time at Weston & Sampson and Albanese Construction.
A man of strong Catholic faith, Greg was a longtime communicant of Transfiguration of the Lord Parish in North Attleboro, regularly attending Mass at Sacred Heart Church. He was also the former superintendent of the Little Rhody Division of the National Railroad Association and cherished collecting elaborate model train sets. An avid New England sports fan, Greg found joy in cheering for his favorite teams and spending time with his beloved dogs. Above all, he treasured moments spent with his adoring family.
In addition to his wife of 58 years, Janet, Greg is survived by his devoted children: Gregory S. Pion, Jr. and his wife Lori of Attleboro; Matthew J. Pion and his wife Diane of North Attleboro; and Derrilyn C. Cole and her husband Ken of Holliston. He also leaves his twelve cherished grandchildren: William, Emma, Jacob, Rachael, Katrina, Garrett, Zackery, Justin, Hallie, Dylan, Alexander, and Noah, as well as his great-grandson Graham. Greg was predeceased by his brothers Albert Pion, Eugene Pion, George Pion, and Russell Pion.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Greg's funeral, which will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 9:00 AM from the Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Reverend David A. Costa at 10:00 AM in Sacred Heart Church (Transfiguration of the Lord Parish), 58 Church Street, North Attleboro. Interment will follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Towne Street, Attleboro Falls.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 13, 2024, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Greg's memory by mailing a check to Care Dimensions Hospice, 75 Sylvan Street, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923, or donating online at giving.caredimensions.org.

I first me Greg in 1985, after my first two months at Weston & Sampson. He came to the project I was assigned to in Coventry, RI, where I was struggling with a difficult contractor. His calm demeanor, astute observations, and fatherly advice, made a tremendous first impression. As years went on, I was always thrilled when he was assigned to oversee the construction of the many projects that I had helped design. Meeting for lunch at the job sites were always a treat. He knew every great lunch spot in every town we worked. His smile was infectious, and he knew how to make us all laugh. It was so comforting to have his expertise to guide us through the toughest problems. He was one of a kind in our industry, and was greatly respected by his colleagues, clients, and the contractors he oversaw. RIP Greg.
