Gwendolyn Hunter Woody, age 82, of Newdale, went Home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 6th, 2025. She was the daughter of the late Bernie and Blanche Chandler Hunter. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Alan R. Woody, who passed away in 2017, and their daughter, Monica Woody Vance, who passed away in 2022.
Gwen was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Her hobbies included knitting and crocheting, working in her flower garden, getting manicures and pedicures with her friends, and loafering and shopping, or as Gwen referred to it, "junking" with her friends. She retired after dedicating many years in the medical field in both Mitchell and Yancey Counties, specializing in medical billing and coding. She was a simple woman whose joy came from her family, especially her grandchildren who meant everything to her. She was lovingly known to everyone as "Granny".
Surviving are her beloved grandchildren: Seth Wright (Santana) of South Toe, and Abby Wright (Daniel) of Jacks Creek; three great-grandchildren: Isabella and Aidan Wright, and Lane Westall. Several cousins and special friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 11th at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Brent Frady will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. prior to the services at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to your local hospice, or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
