Harold G. Abbey, born on September 5, 1932, in Westfield, PA, and a long-time resident of Corning, NY, passed away on June 25, 2023. A man of exceptional intellect and talent, Harold was known for his humble nature which was reflected in his passion for his work and his hobbies.
Harold was a proud and dedicated veteran of the U.S.A.F., serving as an aircraft mechanic technician. His love for mechanics did not stop at his service; he transitioned into a successful career at New York Natural Gas Company as an on-site mechanic and later retired as a Field Site Supervisor for Dresser-Rand. He was a smart, hardworking man who also found joy in tinkering with anything mechanical, often lending his talents to neighbors in need. Beyond his professional life, Harold was a history enthusiast, particularly military history. He enjoyed immersing himself in western classics and war movies, reflecting his appreciation for the past. As Albert Einstein said, "The only source of knowledge is experience," and Harold truly lived by this, seeking a life filled with rich and varied experiences.
Harold was a son to the late Russell Abbey and Dorothy Palmer. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Barnes, and a special friend, Jamie Whitson, three loving granddaughters, Jessica Barnes, Catherine Daily, and Elizabeth Gaeta, as well as seven great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, brother Edwin Abbey and sisters Helen Thiele, Betty Anthony, and Rose Ann "Rosie" Fasick. He was a solitary man who never married but found contentment in a long, healthy, and peaceful life. He will be remembered as a talented individual who lived his life with humility. His burial will take place on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at 12:00 PM at Hope Cemetery, 325 Park Avenue, Corning, NY.
