Hazel Neal Muncus, 86 of Pfafftown, North Carolina, unexpectedly passed away January 8, 2026 at the Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was born on March 13, 1939 to the late George and Gladys Bryant Neal. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Nathaniel “Nat” Muncus and her two brothers; George Mack and Herman Neal.
Hazel retired from the Winston Salem Forsyth County School System, having worked at North Forsyth High School and Jefferson Middle School and developing great relationships with the students and staff. She was also an accomplished baker, turning a hobby into a lucrative catering business, where she devoted a number of years to creating beautiful wedding and birthday cakes for friends and family. Hazel was also a very good cook and shared cooking tips and recipes with her children.
Hazel was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church in Walnut Cove for many years, where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and assisted with youth events and fundraisers for the church. Her home was always a welcoming place for the teens in the both the church and neighborhood. She and her family later moved to Mineral Springs Baptist Church where they remained active with the youth through basketball and softball, while always welcoming the teens in their home. Later in life, Nat and Hazel also attended Old Town Baptist Church and remained there until their health no longer allowed.
Hazel was also a devoted Wake Forest fan and strived to never miss watching a game.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Teresa Barker (Mike), Lori Madden, and a son, Daryl Muncus (Rhonda), 4 grandchildren, Matthew Barker, Chris Madden (Chandler), Reagan Muncus and Meredith Muncus, 2 great grandchildren, Carter Madden and Emilia Madden.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January the 17th at 11:30 am at Old Town Baptist Church – 4386 Shattalon Drive Winston-Salem, North Carolina with Dr. Rick Speas officiating. The family will receive friends and family in the church vestibule before and after the service.
Hazel will be laid to rest beside of her husband at Salem Fork Baptist Church in Dobson, North Carolina.
