SPRINGTOWN, TX - Hugh Donald Wells, 91, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025.
Hugh, also affectionately known as Poppy by his family, was born on January 1, 1934, in Dallas, Texas to
parents, Robert Perry Wells and Myrtle Weddle Wells. He was a graduate of Birdville High School.
Hugh contracted polio as a child, but it never stopped him from doing anything. He went on to ride horses,
roped cattle and won several rodeo events in several states; he was a true cowboy.
Although his first job was working in a bank, he also worked as a concrete contractor and worked for Walnut
Creek Water Department in Springtown before retiring at the age of 83.
He was a resident of Springtown, Texas for nearly 42 years. Hugh was also very loyal to his favorite diner in
town called Howell's Western Cafe, where everyone who worked there knew him and he was there nearly
every single day. He will be greatly missed by his friends who went there.
A grump most of the time, what brought him true joy was his great-grandson, Jackson. From the beginning,
they were two peas in a pod. Every time Hugh would go on his morning donut run, he would always bring
Jackie donut holes and sausage rolls; honking his truck so he would come running for them. Hugh and Jackie
shared tootsie rolls and orange juice all the time; it was their daily ritual. He doted over that little boy; Jackson
could do no wrong in his eyes. In the end, it was Jackson who was keeping him going and he would only perk
up for him. A day was not complete without seeing his best pal.
Hugh also loved watching western films and had the western channel on all day and night. If he wasn't riding
on his lawnmower around the property, he would be huddled up watching his favorite channel.
He loved his grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His nickname "Poppy" was started by
his granddaughter, Rheana Patterson Maloney.
Hugh will be missed by all those he loved and who loved him.
Hugh was preceded by his wife, Paula Wells; his parents, Robert and Myrtle Wells; and daughter, Brenda
Wells.
He is survived by his sons, Christopher Price (wife, Amanda) and Kevin Hutto; daughters, Janet Rhea Markum,
Kami Joe Green, and Shari Williams. Hugh is also survived by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepgrandchildren; and numerous other relatives, friends and close family.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Hugh's honor may be made to Azle's Community Caring Center, Neighbors to
Neighbors Food Bank or a food bank in your area.
