James "Jim" Patrick Allan Jr., 82, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025. He is predeceased by his parents, James Allan Sr. and Suzanne (née Migatulski) Allan of South Orange, New Jersey and New Port Richey, Florida. Jim was the middle of three children, and he is predeceased by his older sister, Patricia Eilbacher of New Jersey and Georgia, and survived by his youngest sister June Allan of Florida. Jim is also survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Margaret "Marghy" (née O'Connor) Allan, sons David (Stefanie née Philips) and Timothy (Mary Alice née Bucha), three grandchildren: Delaney, Sonora, and Kayden, and many nieces and nephews.
Jim grew up in South Orange, New Jersey, attended Columbia High School and graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a degree in finance. During a trip to a Dude Ranch in upstate New York, he met Marghy and they married in 1970. In 1972, Jim and Marghy settled in Union, New Jersey on a quiet cul-de-sac in a home previously owned by Jim's parents. In 1980, their son David was born and in 1986, they adopted their son Timothy from Korea. Sharing a love for the Jersey Shore, Jim and Marghy purchased a summer home in Ocean Beach Unit III and spent summers at the shore. Jim enjoyed the relaxation and escape that the house offered him and his family.
Jim had a lengthy career in the floorcovering industry, accepting a job at Einstein Moomjy the Carpet Department Store. Jim's astute ability as a salesman coupled with a keen sense of design resulted in many lucrative sales and contracts for the company. He eventually became an executive vice president, focusing his talents on the broadloom department and Einstein Moomjy's marketing campaigns. Jim's career built countless relationships with key members within the floorcovering industry and took him around the world to visit mills, and attend a variety of markets and conventions for the products he knew so well. Eventually, in 2015 after over 50 years in the floorcovering industry Jim retired. However, his retirement was short-lived because he took a part time job at the bakery section at King's supermarket in Short Hills, New Jersey.
Jim was very recognizable at Kings as the much older worker who utilized his long career in sales to engage his youthful counterparts and many customers. Ironically, Jim loved his job at Kings, frequently bringing muffins home for his family and neighbors. If you received muffins as a gift from Jim, you were truly loved.
Jim was a kind, generous, outgoing man with an amazing sense of style. A good week for Jim would include training a new salesperson at work to find confidence in their abilities, working in the yard and tending to plants in the gardens around the house, and being notified of a sale at Brooks Brothers to add to his polished wardrobe.
An avid gardner, Jim cherished plants and made sure his home's landscape looked pristine. He was also sincerely faithful and he and Marghy were active members of many parishes, specifically Holy Spirit in Union, New Jersey and St. Helen's in Westfield, New Jersey. He also had a true love for dogs, and is predeceased by Malarkey and Piper, two Norfolk Terriers that he adored as if they were his children.
Jim was an inviting host. He had a sincerely welcoming quality. He would often offer his guests something to eat or drink MANY times during a visit, to the point where you almost felt pressure NOT to accept. He had an ease of conversation and would effortlessly engage guests or tell stories about his travel or experiences in the corporate world.
Although Jim is no longer physically present, our family holds him close within our hearts. In order to honor the man that we loved so dearly, challenge yourself to live each day with the idea that it is not fame, intellectual ability, or wealth, that are true measures of success. Rather, it is the beauty of selflessness, generosity, and sincere devotion to family that makes a person's life worth celebrating. Jim was the living embodiment of this philosophy.
The family would like to thank the compassionate nursing and care team at CareOne Assisted Living and Memory Care in East Brunswick, New Jersey, Jim's "home" for the last year and a half.
Visitation will be at Greenville Memorial Home, 374 Danforth Avenue, Jersey City on Thursday, August 21st from 3-7 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Helen's Church, 1600 Rahway Avenue, Westfield on Friday at 11:30 AM. Cremation will follow privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim's name to the
Alzheimer's Association.
