Dr. James Greaver Baker, 92, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away May 31, 2025. James was born on January 18, 1933 in Lexington, Kentucky to the late Homer Lee Baker and Evelyn Greaver Baker. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 69 years Patricia McCoy Baker and his brother, Bill Dudley Baker. James is survived by his three children Julie Baustien (Bill), Linda Taylor (Paul), Laura Lawless (Michael); his four grandchildren Beau Baustien (Laura), Rease Baustien (Jillian), Sarah Katherine Lawless, Michael James Lawless, his four great grandchildren, Lennie, Lila, Marliegh and Baker Baustien, and his nephew, many nieces and their families.
James, better known as Jim, Jimmy, Doc or Bake to his friends and family graduated from Male High School in Louisville, where he was a member of Castlewood and Athenaeum Clubs. He graduated college from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
He served his country for two years in Korea, then graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School and completed his residency at St. Joseph's Hospital. He practiced medicine for over 50 years. During that time, he was a board member of Baptist Hospital and served as President of the Medical Staff in 1985 and Chairman of the Executive Committee in 1986. He was named one of the "Top Docs" by Louisville Magazine in 2016.
Jim was a member of Harmony Landing Country Club where he served on the board and as President in 1982. Some of his fondest memories were on the golf course with his buddy's and Wednesday night dinners with his close friends. He and his wife loved entertaining and spending time with family and friends in their home or at Lake Cumberland.
Jim would tell you he had four passions in his life: His wife and family, using his medical skills and knowledge to diagnose and save lives, golf and the Kentucky Wildcats! The family would like to thank his friends, patients and caregivers for their care, love, dedication, and friendship.
Visitation will be held on Saturday June 21st at Second Presbyterian Church, 3701 Old Brownsboro Rd from 10:30 am-11:45 am with a service to follow in the sanctuary at noon. A reception for family and friends will be held in Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. A private graveside service will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery.

I remember Dr. Baker from being a 24 years long patient of his partner, Dr. Frank Harrell, a longtime friend and golfing partner of mine. Sometimes when Frank was out of the office, Dr. Baker would offer to see me. He would frequently ask me about my cousins, Alan and Lucy Steilberg, who were friends of his from University of Kentucky back in the middle 1950s. Dr. Baker was an intelligent, energetic, kind and professional gentleman who dedicated his life to medicine many years after many people would have retired. My prayers will be with his family during this time of sorrow. May Jimmy rest in the arms of Jesus, forever.
