James Ball Obituary

James Patrick Ball, 73, died Friday, February 9, 2024 at Darby Glenn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Preceded in death by parents Herbert E. and Mary E. Johnson Ball, brother David Ball, and sister Theresa Ball Starner. Survived by wife Sharon G. Ball, two brothers; two sons, Robert (Tabitha) and Patrick; stepchildren Kimberly Shepard, Christopher Shepard, and Christopher Burney; seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren; many friends, including neighbors Steve and Nancy Morbitzer.
Retired from the U.S. Army in 2010 after 22 years of service to our country, including service in Vietnam. Long time (30 years) counter worker for his uncle Ray at Johnson's Fish Market on Main Street in Downtown Columbus. Active and tireless volunteer for his St. Mary Magdalene Church family, often referred to as their "Bingo Czar" by then pastor, Father Charles Cotton.
After his years at the famous Fish Market, Jim went to work for 17 years as a custodian for Southwest City Schools, and became known lovingly by students and faculty as "Jimbo."
Family and friends will gather at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 19, at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 473 South Roys Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43204. Memorial Mass to follow at 11 a.m., Fr. Charles Cotton, celebrant. Military honors to follow Mass.
The family welcomes donations in Jim's memory to Special Olympics at www.support.specialolympics.org, in honor of his Special Olympian brother, David "B-Ball" Ball as well as Jim.
