James Cunningham Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Murphy Funeral Home - Hamilton Township on Jan. 16, 2026.
James T. Cunningham Jr. (Jim) died on January 2, 2026, at the age of 71, in his hometown of Trenton, New Jersey. His passing follows a courageous, years-long battle with cancer, of which he survived multiple onsets.
Born on September 25, 1954 to the late Rita and James T. Cunningham Sr. (Tom), Jim lived nearly his entire life in the Trenton area. He lived his life anchored by family and an enduring sense of responsibility. He was a devout Catholic man, raised in the Church and attending mass each week. He served in the RCIA program, introducing Catholicism and teaching adults new to the faith. He also spent many dedicated years in caregiving for his longtime wife and parents at the end of their lives, and he gave through philanthropic efforts to a variety of organizations, including the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
A proud graduate of Upsala College, Jim was the son of longtime public-sector employees, and he followed in their footsteps through his career path as an accountant for the New Jersey Department of Taxation. Through his long career with the State, he worked his way up to the role of supervisor. There, he made lifelong friends and took part in casual activities such as bowling. He also enjoyed relaxing to country music.
Jim met the love of his life, the late Susan (Montes) Cunningham, through his volunteer service with the RCIA. They married and lived together in Trenton, raising their beloved daughter, Sara (Nick) Holquist. Together, they enjoyed movies, vacations, and family gatherings, and their dog, Joey. They also celebrated his longtime love of professional sports, following teams in Philadelphia and New York.
He was the brother of Mary Susan (John) Riley and a doting uncle and godfather to his niece, Jennifer (Erik) Froelich. His joy was multiplied with the arrival of his grandsons, Marley and Julian Holquist, and his great-nephew, Ben Froelich. Each family member held a special place in his heart.
Services: Jim will be remembered in a funeral mass on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at 10:00am at Saint Gregory the Great Church in Hamilton Square, NJ. Interment will follow at 11:00am at St. Mary's Cemetery in Trenton, NJ. All are welcome. My name is Nicole and I have been a neighbor and friend to Susan and Jim since I moved next door to them in 2002. Please accept my deepest sympathies. Jim was a really good guy and neighbor. I enjoyed our little over the fence chats and will miss him very much.

Hello! My name is Wayne Wieser. I attended St. Anthony's High School with Jim. Strange, but I got to know Jim in my Senior year. We were in Gym class! We spoke almost daily. He was very nice to me. Look forward speaking to him. What a life! He fought the good fight. Sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Wayne Wieser

Sorry to read about Jim's passing. I was a relative of Jim's through the Cunningham side, and was in his company on several occasions through the years. He was always a kind presence, and will remembered fondly.
