Dr. James A. "Jim" Dickerson, 75, died Aug. 9, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born July 8, 1948, in St. Paul, MN, to Joseph and Melicent (Melly) Fritze Dickerson.
Dr. Dickerson received his Bachelor Degree in History and Psychology from the University of Maryland, a Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Iowa, and a Doctorate Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling Psychology from the University of Maryland. He earned a Diplomate of Pharmacology from the Psychologist Register. He served his internship at the Devereux Foundation in Devon, PA. Dr. Dickerson worked for 30 years in the Veterans' System in VA hospitals in numerous states. In April 2013 he came to Hutchinson to work in private practice with his longtime dear friend, Dr. Mark Goodman, at Hutchinson Psychological Services.
On October 6, 1979, Jim was married to Kristy Elfe. They were married for 36 years until her death in 2015 in Hutchinson. They had two sons, Joseph Dickerson, Gillette, WY, and Matthew Dickerson, Omaha, NE. In 2021, James married Lois A. Porter Gartman.
James traveled to countries all over the world with his wife and son Matt, including Great Britain, Cuba, Europe, Africa, Russia, Israel, China (with his 84-year-old father Joe) as well as across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Jim was an avid reader, reading several books a month, while traveling, and sometimes one a night. He visited the library nearly every day to read current events, economics, politics, and many other subjects. Jim loved playing baseball and football. He usually played one or the other during his lunch hours with his co-workers. He was an NFL football fan and watched faithfully during the season, yelling, and urging his teams on.
He is survived by: his wife, Lois; sons, Matthew and Joseph; brother Don (Lynae) Dickerson, Apple Valley MN; Lois' children, Paul Porter (Susan), Hutchinson, and Jennifer Ekberg (Darren), San Antonio, TX; Jennifer's children, Samantha, Denton, TX and Jacob, San Antonio, TX; numerous cousins; Elfe's in-laws and dear friends living all over the United States.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a private burial in Sheridan, WY. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Hutchinson Public Library, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main St, Hutchinson, KS, 67501.
