James Alfred Gaskins, Jr., MD, 86, passed away on December 28, 2024 in St. Augustine, Florida.
James is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Henderson Gaskins; his three children, James Alfred Gaskins III of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl; Drew Davis Gaskins of Vero Beach, Fl; and Kathryn Ann Gaskins of St. Augustine, Fl. James was also the proud grandfather of Graysen, Ryland, Lili, and Amelia Gaskins.
James was born in New Bern, North Carolina in 1938. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for both undergraduate and medical school, earning his medical degree in 1965.
Upon graduation, James accepted a General Surgery internship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. It was was there he met Carolyn Henderson, and the two married in 1967.
After completing his internship and residency in General Surgery, James attained certification by the American Board of Surgery in 1972.
James became a Commissioned Officer in the United States Navy serving at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina.
Subsequent to his military service James established a private General Surgery practice in Clearwater, Florida until 1988. Desiring to return to his home State of North Carolina, James and his family moved to Hickory, and continued his General Surgery practice.
Upon his retirement in 1999, James and his wife, Carolyn, relocated to St. Augustine, Florida.
The son of a mechanical Engineer, James had a knack for woodworking. His expertise was evidenced by crafting fine wood furniture for his family as well as drafting plans and building historically accurate wooden vessels. He was an integral member of LAMP's Boatworks program at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum for many years.
James also had a keen interest in aviation and was a radio controlled model airplane builder/enthusiast. He was a member of Ancient City RC Flyers. He delighted in his friendships and time spent at the flying field.
Per James' wishes, a private service will be held in his memory.
