It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the passing of James Patrick Murphy, born June 4, 1935, in Yonkers, New York, to Philomena (Grippo) Murphy and James J. Murphy. James departed this life peacefully after 90 remarkable years defined by devotion to his family, his faith, his community, and a deep desire to serve others.
James grew up on Amackassin Terrace in Yonkers, in a warm and spirited home filled with laughter, tradition, and the kind of sibling closeness that lasts a lifetime. He shared an irreplaceable bond with his sisters - Margaret "Peggy" Murphy, Helen (Murphy) Defeo, Maryanne "Duffy" (Murphy) Cummings, and his baby sister Susan (Murphy) Race - all of whom preceded him in death. Their stories, humor, and unwavering affection remained among the most treasured parts of his heart.
He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and later Gorton High School, where he was known as "Jimmy" or "Murph." He excelled as an athlete and natural leader, earning respect both on and off the field. His determination carried him to Iona College, where he proudly earned his degree.
In 1960, James married the love of his life, Rosalind M. MacLeod, beginning a 65-year journey built on devotion, humor, mutual respect, and unwavering commitment. Together they raised five children - Jane, James, Brian, Gregory, and Christa - creating a family grounded in faith, compassion, and service to others.
Family Journeys & Community Life
Over the decades, James and Rosalind built their life with purpose and resilience. His desire to serve others led him into public life, and in 1968, he was elected Westchester County Supervisor, representing Yonkers during a period of transition and growth. He was admired for his common-sense leadership, fairness, and unwavering commitment to the people he served. James approached public service with humility, dedication, and a genuine belief in doing what was right for the community he loved.
In 1970, the family moved to West Nyack, New York, and later, in 1979, to Burke, Virginia, where James served in management roles within the Gestetner Corporation. In 1985, the family returned to New York, settling in Stormville, before ultimately moving to Johns Creek, Georgia, in 1994, where James lived for the remainder of his life.
In every community he called home, James became a source of warmth, friendship, and encouragement. He coached youth sports, supported school and parish activities, and served as a Eucharistic Minister and active member of parish prayer groups. He offered quiet leadership, a strong moral compass, and a compassionate presence to all who knew him. James was also known for his lifelong passion for music and singing, and was a proud member of the Alexandria Harmonizers during his time in Northern Virginia. His quick, clever sense of humor - a gentle, insightful wit - brought ease to conversations, comfort during difficult moments, and joy to those fortunate enough to spend time with him.
A Life Well Lived
Across nine decades, James remained a man of faith, integrity, and quiet strength. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, a loving brother, an animated "Uncle Jimmy" with a host of characters for the young at heart, a caring grandfather, a trusted friend, and a steady mentor. His warm smile, gentle humor, and generous heart left a lasting impact on all who crossed his path.
Legacy
James Patrick Murphy leaves behind a legacy rooted in integrity, compassion, and enduring love. He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Rosalind, and their five children:
• Jane (Alan) Walker of Alpharetta, GA
• James (Darla) Murphy of Greenville, DE
• Brian Murphy of Alpharetta, GA
• Gregory (Michele) Murphy of Selbyville, DE
• Christa Murphy of Minneapolis, MN
He is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immeasurable joy. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the wonderful caregivers, support staff, and friends - especially the team at Addington Place of Johns Creek - who provided James with such loving care and support in his time of need. Though James has now been reunited with his beloved sisters and parents, the love he shared and the lessons he taught continue to live on in all who were touched by his life.
A Reflection of Faith
James believed firmly in the promise of eternal life. As is often said:
"Your time on earth is but a dot, but eternity is a line without end.
How you live within the dot determines how you spend the line."
James lived his "dot" with faith, kindness, purpose, and joy, and now has entered the everlasting line with peace.
