James O. Rivera, 61, of Brookfield, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 24, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend, James lived a life full of creativity, laughter and quiet strength.
Born on May 21, 1963, in Tarrytown, NY, James was the beloved son of Jose (Tony) and Josephine Rivera. He graduated from Ossining High School and initially followed his passion for style and beauty into cosmetology, working for many years as a talented hair stylist. Later in life, he pivoted to pursue his love of cooking and last worked as a chef at New Milford Hospital, where his kindness and culinary skills touched the lives of many.
James brought a unique artistry to everything he did-whether behind the chair, in the kitchen, or with a paintbrush in hand. A gifted artist, he found joy in painting and sculpting, and was also a devoted bonsai enthusiast, nurturing his miniature trees with great care and patience.
For the past 18 years, James called Brookfield home, where he and his wife of 27 years, Elizabeth (Fulgum) Rivera, built a beautiful life together and raised three wonderful children: Julia, Leah, and Nicholas. His greatest pride and joy was his family, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience.
In addition to Elizabeth and their children, James is survived by his parents, Jose and Josephine Rivera; his siblings, Robert Rivera, Maria Rivera, and Rosalind Prainito and her husband Ron; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Albert Rivera, whose memory lives on through his wife, Terri.
A Funeral Liturgy to honor and celebrate James' life will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Saint Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, 13 Pembroke Road, Danbury. Family and friends are welcome to gather beginning at 10:00 AM at the church. Interment will take place privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in James' memory can be made to New Milford Hospital, where he shared his gifts and compassion with so many: https://www.nuvancehealth.org/giving/support-your-community-hospital
James will be remembered for his warm heart, his creative spirit, and the deep love he held for those around him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
