Janice (Jan) Wentworth Rand, 87, of Hingham, formerly of Centerville and Westborough, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at The Residence at Penniman Hill in Hingham with her sons by her side. She was the loving wife of the late Warren A. Rand.
Born in South Weymouth, she was the daughter of the late John Q. and Eleanor A. (Torrey) Wentworth. She was raised and educated in Braintree, MA and was a 1955 graduate of Braintree High School.
Jan and Warren grew up together in Braintree. Mom would say when she saw Dad riding his bike as a little kid in the school yard, with his racoon tail swinging from the back of his bike seat, she knew that he was the man she wanted to marry! Warren's parents built a new home in1952, right across the street from Jan. They began dating in 1954 and in September of 1959, Jan married Warren, the love of her life.
Jan started working in 1955 at the Quincy Cooperative Bank in downtown Quincy, MA until 1962 when she had her first son.
In 1973, Warren and Jan purchased the Harper Funeral Home in Westborough, MA. Mom was sad to leave Braintree and all her family. However, she supported Dad fully and trusted his decisions. The business was renamed Rand and Harper Funeral Home and Mom supported the family business alongside Warren from 1973 until their retirement in 1996. Together, they not only built a successful business based on integrity and compassion, they also quickly built a strong network of close and dear friends still cherished to this day. Jan was a member of The Congregational Church of Westborough, a past member of the church's Woman's Fellowship, and was a member of the Westborough Women's Club. In her younger years Jan was also a Rainbow Girl.
Jan was most famous for her passion for correspondence. With her absolutely perfect penmanship, you would always receive a card or a note expressing her heartfelt message of happy birthday, congratulations, get well, sympathy or greeting for every holiday. Even though she would spend hours at the card shop searching for the perfect verses and sentiment, she always added an additional handwritten personal note inside.
She is survived by two sons, Robert W. Rand and his wife, Mauri, of Westborough and David W. Rand and his partner, Leonard Condenzio of Scituate, MA, two grandsons, Nathaniel T. and Curtis W. Rand, her loving niece, who was more like a daughter, Joan Shedlock and her husband Stephen of Forestdale, MA, their two daughters Samantha Shedlock and Andrea Ryan, and her brother-in-law Wayne F. Rand and his wife Janet of Vero Beach, FL.
She is predeceased by her sister, Sally W. Schatzl of Weymouth, MA in 2011 and her nephew, Glenn T. (Schatzl) Scott in 1990.
Her funeral service will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024, at 11:00 AM in The Congregational Church of Westborough, 57 West Main Street, Westborough and her burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Calling hours are at the Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main Street, Westborough, on Thursday October 17, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
We would like to thank all of the staff and friends at The Residence at Penniman Hill for all of their love, compassion, guidance and support over the past four years, as well as for Caring Hospice and Safe Hands for their guidance, strength and support over the past few weeks.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Shriners Hospitals for Children, or to the Parkinsons Foundation.
