Jean Caldwell Hoffmaster, age 96, of Louisville, died peacefully on August 21, 2024 at her home at The Meadow. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Colonel George Christian Hoffmaster, Jr. (USA-Ret.), and daughter Sally Hoffmaster Foy. She is survived by her daughter Peggy Darden and husband Wim of Louisville. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Katie Wettig and husband Theo of Louisville, Charlie Darden of Louisville, Bill Foy Jr. and wife Kellie of Roanoke, VA, Kelly Williams and husband Tom of Fort Mill, SC, Ashley O'Rear and husband Josh of Richmond, VA, Tommy Foy of Tega Cay, SC, and eight great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Rebecca Jean.
Jean was born in Fayetteville, TN, August 17, 1928. She was the only child of the late Arthur R. Caldwell and Margaret S. Caldwell. She grew up in Louisville and graduated from Anchorage High School and the University of Louisville in 1950, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She married Colonel Hoffmaster in August 1951. U.S. Army assignments took them to Straubing, Heidelberg and Baumholder, Germany. Stateside, they lived on posts at Fort Pickett, VA, Fort Meade, MD, Fort Knox, KY and Fort Leavenworth, KS, before settling in and raising her family in Springfield, VA.
Jean was an avid reader, a gifted cook and an enthusiastic supporter of the United States Military Academy, Class of 1949.
A graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation to the West Point Association of Graduates or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
