James Link "Jim" Hanvey, 72, passed away Saturday, October 12, 2024, in Ankara, Turkey.
Born in Allendale, SC, he was the son of the late Alex Hanvey and the late Mary Louise Hanvey. Jim was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a 1970 graduate of T.L. Hanna High School where he was editor of Tidings, the school's yearbook. He was a 1974 graduate of the University of Tennessee where he was Commander in the Sigma Nu Fraternity.
After graduating, he worked with his father at Hanvey Corporation and then opened his own company, The Hanvey Company, in Atlanta. After working in Texas as a Project Manager, he settled back in Atlanta as an Environmental Engineer at CH2M Hill. In addition to conducting environmental projects on various military bases in both Turkey and the U.S., Jim conducted environmental inspections under the city of Atlanta before the 1996 Olympics. He later moved to California to oversee the hazardous ground water problems at Hinkley, CA, made famous by the movie, "Erin Brockovich. After retiring in 2021, he returned to live in Turkey.
Survivors include his brother, Steve Hanvey (Sara) and sister, Jane Farnsworth, both of Anderson; nieces and nephews, Bob Hanvey (Shannon), Mollie Ducworth (Clay), Jimbo Robinson (Mary Morgan), Alex Robinson (Paula), and Caitlin Robinson; great-nieces and nephews, Addison Ducworth, William Ducworth, Emma Hanvey, Anna Grace Hanvey, Tripp Robinson, and Lela Robinson; and his special partner, Kuntay Sumer.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 20, at Vandiver Chapel of First Baptist Church in Anderson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
