Joe Longcore of Poughkeepsie, NY, a devoted husband, father, uncle, brother and friend, died peacefully at home on Dec. 17 from cardiac and pulmonary complications. He was 74 years old.
Joe was a talented artist who captured many beautiful scenes and moments with a camera. His photographs are the gifts he leaves behind to those who loved him best while his calm demeanor and sharp wit will be missed by everyone who knew him. In the most boisterous gathering, he would find a spot where he could quietly connect with a family member or friend.
Born on June 22nd, 1950, to the late Doris (Christensen) Longcore and the late Dr. Howard G. Longcore, Joe was the youngest of four children. He attended Rockford High School and Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and developing a passion for photography. In law school, he met the love of his life, Adina "Dini'' Gilbert Longcore, a union that lasted more than 49 years. They had two children, Joanna Longcore and Andrew Longcore.
He worked for the Social Security Administration from 1975 until his retirement in 2005. For many years, Joe and Adina lived in Red Hook, NY, where they raised their family and made lifelong friends. Three years ago, Joe and Dini relocated to the Eastdale community in Poughkeepsie.
Besides his wife and children, Joe is survived by his siblings Terry (George) Watson and Mike (Kathy) Longcore, brother-in-law Ilan Gilbert, many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. and a constellation of friends he thought of as family. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Jack Longcore.
Memorial service is tentatively scheduled for January 19th, 2025, with additional details to follow as soon as they are available. Donations in his memory can be made to National Park Trust or Photographers Without Borders
