It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph James Wolf, age 59, who left us peacefully at his home in Kohler on September 26, 2024. Joe was widely known for his remarkable basketball career, but to those who knew him off the court, he was so much more.
Joe was born on December 17, 1964, the youngest of Leo Francis and Patricia Mary (Smith) Wolf’s seven children. As a Kohler High School student, Joe was known as one of Wisconsin’s most accomplished high school basketball players, leading his team to three state championships. His basketball prowess continued at the University of North Carolina, where he received many team, conference and national honors. His career statistics place him in the upper reaches of many of UNC’s statistical categories. As the 13th draft pick of the Los Angeles Clippers in 1987, Joe went on to play twelve years in the NBA and left behind a legacy of commitment to excellence. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel named him Wisconsin’s all-time greatest player. After retiring, he devoted himself to coaching at all levels, inspiring young athletes around the globe. Most recently, he served as the Assistant Coach for the Wisconsin Herd of the NBA G League, Milwaukee Bucks affiliate.
More importantly, Joe was a beacon of light in the lives of those who knew him. He was a loving son and brother, cherished uncle and cousin, devoted classmate and friend, and a wonderful human being. Joe was actively involved in various community initiatives and always enjoyed his time with family and friends. He truly was “the life of the party”. His laughter and warmth brought joy to countless gatherings, where he made every moment special. His legacy of kindness, compassion, and love for life will never be forgotten.
Joe is survived by his six siblings: Mary Margaret Hammond (Ben), John Wolf (Linda), Laurie Wolf-Dahm (Steve Dahm), Jeff Wolf (Jean), Judy Wolf (Bill Freis) and Jim Wolf (Ann). He will be sorely missed by his seventeen nieces and nephews, who were blessed to have him as their uncle: Jay Wolf (Liva), Tori Hill (McArthur, Jr), Benny Hammond (Liz), Cassie Hammond (Chris Knap), Britten Wolf (Emily), Keenan Horness (Matthew), Christian Wolf (Kelsey), Parker Wolf (Aaron Brockman), Kendall Bennett (Kiefer), Mackenzie Wolf (Garrett Wilson), Madison Wolf (Matthew Brewster), Jenny Dahm (Emily Sherman), Jim Dahm (Krista Nelson), Ryan Dahm (Jana Boerlin), Jessica Wolf (Bennett Hutson), Taylor Wolf, Kali Wolf and seventeen grand nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his loving parents and other dear relatives.
A private family Mass of Christian Burial will take place. We invite all who knew and loved Joe to join in celebrating his life at a public tribute at the Kohler Memorial Theatre on Saturday, October 12 at 9:00 am. Following the service, a time of public gathering and celebration of Joe’s life will be held at Roosevelt Park in Kohler beginning at 11:30 am.
