John Richard “Dick” Chaffer, 82, of Bozeman, MT, passed at his home July 21, 2025, in the presence of family.
Dick was born April 13, 1943, in Seattle, WA, to John and Virginia (Washburn) Chaffer. After high school, he was selected to attend the United States Military Academy. Upon graduating he served in Korea and Viet Nam. After his military service he earned his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington. He worked for Boeing before moving to Bozeman 25 years ago where he studied for a Master’s degree in Physics at Montana State University. In retirement, Dick enjoyed spending time with family and model railroading.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Barbara McConville; son, John Steven (Katherine Stohr) Chaffer; step-daughter Laura McConville Grier; step-son, Brian (Nicole) McConville; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, August 5, 2025, 9:45-10:45 a.m., at Dahl Funeral & Cremation Service, 300 Highland Blvd, Bozeman. A private family graveside service with military honors will take place later.
