John served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict, stationed overseas. After his military service, he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.
John will be fondly remembered for his musical talents. In high school, he formed a band and was its lead vocalist and guitarist, showcasing his deep passion and skill for music. He was also known for his kindness, often sharing his musical gifts with his family, including a special song for his sister upon her return home from New York City. He also had a special fondness for dogs.
He held various jobs throughout his life, but his greatest dedication was caring for his mother for 16 years following the passing of his father. With the support of Phyllis Stephens, and her son Nick Gee, John was able to move to Painted Post, NY and ensure that his mother could stay in her home during those years. His siblings always admired his ability to live independently, live a productive life, and be of enormous help to his family in spite of his mental health disease.
John is survived by his sisters, Bonnie Parken of Schaumburg, IL, and Marguerite Parken Harris of Wallingford, PA; and his brother, Dr. Peter Parken of Corning. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Walter Parken.
Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney Street, Corning, NY, on Saturday, January 4, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 PM. John will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery in Painted Post, NY.
