John D. Scanlon, 85, "Johnny", a 52-year resident of Edgewater and previously of Cheverly, MD, passed away on August 18, 2025, in Gambrills, MD.
Johnny was born on February 1, 1940, in Washington, D.C., to the late Edward and Mary Scanlon.
After graduating from high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. Upon completing his service, Johnny dedicated his career to the Prince George's County Fire Department from 1966 to 1992. He began as a volunteer and held numerous assignments as a career firefighter, ultimately retiring as a Battalion Fire Chief.
He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters. He enjoyed reading about history and the military. As a young man, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.
In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Joyce Scanlon, one son, Steven Holloway, his brother, Edward Scanlon, and his sister, Marie Grace.
He is survived by his children, William Holloway of Chester, MD, Kathy Egeli of Fishersville, VA, Daniel Scanlon, Mary Symanski, and Bridget Scanlon, all of Crofton, MD, his sisters, Susie Hawley of Jacksonville, FL, and Melissa Hebble of Crofton, MD. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, Eric, Ethan, and Emma Egli, Will Holloway, and Connor Symanski.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Johnny's life on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 3 pm until 7 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037, where a funeral service will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 11:30 am. Interment with military honors will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd., Crownsville, MD 21032.
