John J. Stanaway Jr.

John J. Stanaway Jr., 81, of Wheaton, passed away August 21, 2024. Beloved husband of Nancy Allured; loving father of Chris (Denise) Stanaway, Travis (Mindy) Stanaway and stepfather of Jeb Gleason-Allured and Gabe (Lyzz) Gleason-Allured; proud grandfather of Jack, Matthew, Aaron, Katie, Stanley and the late Alex; and great-grandfather of Alex and Henry. John was the oldest of nine children of John J. Stanaway, Sr and Mabel Stanaway, cherished brother of Steve, Alan, Sherry, Stormy, the late Robin, Dusty, Randy, and the late Jeffrey.
John began his engineering career at Newport News Shipbuilding in the electrical engineering apprenticeship program. He was then sent to the University of Virginia to get his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He was recruited by Bell Labs (AT&T) and sent to Stanford University for his master's in electrical engineering. Following his start in the shipyards, his entire career was with Bell Labs in New Jersey and Illinois, a job he loved. While there he was named Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, co-authored seven patents for Bell Labs and published technical papers in industry journals.
After retirement John found bicycling and became an avid cyclist first with Wheaton Pedal Pushers and then Elmhurst Bike Club. He developed many new friendships within these two bike clubs and traveled with bike to events and challenges. His happy place was on a bike.
Memorial Visitation Tuesday August 27, 2024, from 3 p.m. until time of Memorial Service 6 p.m. at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home 430 E. Roosevelt Rd., Wheaton, IL 60187. Services conclude at the funeral home.
