John L. Thompson, lovingly known as "Johnny", passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2025. He was born on December 19, 1935, in Corning, NY to the late Daniel and Dorothy Thompson.
John lived a life brimming with love and dedication to his family and friends. His unwavering commitment to his loved ones was a testament to his generous heart, and his memory continues to serve as a beacon of compassion and warmth for all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
John always found great pleasure reminiscing about the many years of fun with family and friends at their Cayuta Lake cottage home. He was always eager to take guests on his scenic lake tour and looked forward to teaching everyone how to water ski. These fun lake times always came with great cookouts and barbeques. John was also very well known for his deer and meat processing shop at their Caton home. Many, many people would come back year after year!
John started his career in the grocery business at a very young age. He worked for a few local grocery stores ahead of opening his own store, "Thompson's Grocery" in Mansfield, Pa.
Eventually John & Sally would move back to Corning – Caton where John worked at the Foodmart, managing the Market Street store for many years and eventually moving on to Flickinger's and Scrivner, large wholesale companies where he enjoyed the travel across NY and PA.
John and Sally loved to dance, especially square dancing with friends and also doing the polka whenever it was played! He was also a communicant of All Saints Parish, and last but not least, he was a die-hard Buffalo Bills Fan- GO BILLS!
John Thompson is survived by his sons, Gary (Renee), John (LuAnn), and Russ (Holly)Thompson; grandchildren, April (Chris O'Connell), Amy (Penny Philp), and Anthony (Ashley); great grandchildren, Kaili (Graydon) Locey, Kristi Allen (Jared Baker), and Aubrey and Avery Thompson; great-great grandchildren, Ryder Landon, Greer and Callum Locey, and Ronan Baker; sister, Gloria Clark; sister-in-law, Jo Ann Thompson; and brother-in-law, Richard Woodhouse. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally Thompson.
Calling Hours will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. 1st Street, Corning, NY, where a Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 pm. Burial to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corning.

So sorry to hear of John's passing. John gave me my 1st job at the Market Street Foodmart while I was still in High School.
A great boss and a great person. I was honored to work for him and considered him not just a boss but a friend. John treated everyone there like family! He will surely be missed.

This wonderful man and his wife Sally had a hugh in my life, I am so honored to be one of his students to learn how to water ski at the lake, took me in when I had no where to go. My heart is broke. I will love them both forever. You will be truly missed.

So very sorry to hear of Uncle Johns passing. He was such a sweet man who genuinely would ask how I was doing each time I saw him. His smile and twinkling eyes will be so very missed. Hugs and love to my cousins and the rest of us who were blessed to have known Uncle John.
