Joseph William Atkinson

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph William Atkinson, who passed away at home on May 13, 2025, at the age of 68.
Born in Scranton, PA, to Joseph William Atkinson and Julianne Teresa Cawley Atkinson, Joseph pursued education at Malvern Prep before attending Villanova University. He later dedicated more than two decades of his life to serving in the United States Air Force, where he played a vital role in crash recovery and jet fighter operations. His service in Desert Storm, Desert Shield, and the liberation of Kuwait earned him numerous commendations, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his country.
Following his retirement in 1998, Joseph continued to serve his fellow airmen, working as a civilian instructor from 1998 to 2022, imparting his vast knowledge of jet fighters to new generations. His passion for teaching, his wisdom, and his dedication left a lasting mark on those he mentored.
Beyond his distinguished military and professional career, Joseph had a vibrant personality that brought joy to those around him. His love for practical jokes kept family and friends laughing, and he enjoyed spending his time solving crosswords and honing his skills in target shooting.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Katie Atkinson; his cherished children, Jennifer Atkinson, Kim Ashley, Lindsay Cotterman, Christopher Atkinson, and stepson Christopher Claeys; as well as his legacy carried forward by 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also fondly remembered by his siblings, Mimi Atkinson, Kathleen Atkinson-Albright, Michael Atkinson and William Atkinson.
Joseph's life was one of service, laughter, and love-his memory will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
