Joseph "Joey" Schmidt

Joseph "Joey" Schmidt, 80, of LaMoure, ND passed away on August 2, 2024 at St. Rose Care Center in LaMoure under care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
He was born January 10, 1944 in Valley City, ND to Joe and Fannie (Lubbers) Schmidt. He graduated from LaMoure High School in 1962. He lived on the Schmidt family homestead by LaMoure until his marriage to Louise Warren on October 30, 1970 in Valley City, ND, after which they lived one mile west of the farm. Upon Fannie's passing in 1972, Joey and Louise moved to the main farm with Joe to help care for the farmstead, which would later become a ND Centennial Farm. There they raised three children, while growing small grains and maintaining a black Angus cattle herd. After Louise's passing in 2008, Joey married Yamin (Min) Lu on July 16, 2011.
Joey's love for farming and ranching poured into everything he did; he made his farming career into a lifestyle. While providing for his family, he taught them work ethic, money management, morals, and that family is always important. He always had a soft spot for his grandkids. He loved to tell a good story of his life experiences or crack a joke to earn a smile. Joey also had a love for dogs from an early age, particularly Saint Bernards. He also heavily supported the beef industry, receiving the Commercial Breeder of the Year Award in 2002 from the ND Angus Association.
He is survived by his wife, Min; two sons, Kent (Melissa) Schmidt and Dean (Christine) Schmidt; one daughter, Heather (Evan) Legge; one stepson, Lu Lu; seven grandchildren, Jacob Schmidt, Joshua Schmidt, Makala Schmidt, Brennen Schmidt, Ella Legge, Anna Legge, and Rex Legge; one half-sister, Virginia Olson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, half-brother Russell Falter, wife Louise, and brother-in-law John Olson.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2024 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by his funeral at 10:30 a.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, LaMoure, ND. Joey's service will be live streamed here. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery near LaMoure.
